Essential Info

The Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam IP Camera is the newest innovation in secure home monitoring. It combines all of the greatest features from previous generations of IP cameras and adds the latest technology. The Vstarcam delivers them all into a compact wireless IP camera that has a user-friendly installation and remote access to view and record everything that happens in your home or office - all from your smartphone, tablet or PC. To top it off - this product is available for under $100!

For outoor monitoring, consider using the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam Wireless Outdoor HD IP Security Camera with Night Vision. Both cameras can be used and accessed together from the Eye4 suite of products as a whole home solution for monitoring your property both indoors and outdoors.

Please Note: as with most IP / Network cameras, Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam IP cameras are designed to work with a specific suite of software and applications - and will work perfectly with the Eye4 suite of products as described below. Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam IP cameras will not work with, nor are they intended to work with INSTEON for Hub, MobiLinc, or any other 3rd party software or application.

Remote Access from Anywhere

Using the Eye4 Cloud IP Camera downloads you can remotely monitor your property from:
  • a local PC or laptop computer on your network using the Eye4 For Windows desktop program
  • any PC or laptop computer with Windows Explorer (Active X Download required) connected to the Internet using the Eye4 For Web web browser
  • a smartphone or tablet using the Eye4 for iPhone or Eye4 For Android app

    720p High-Definition Resolution

Most IP cameras under $100 only offer a maximum resolution of 640x480 pixels - standard definition. The Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam comes in at a whopping 1280x720 pixels (720p) High-Definition (HD) for crystal clear video. Example of recorded video.

    Remote Pan / Tilt Control

With the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam, you can remotely move the camera horizontally left and right (pan) and vertically up and down (tilt). It features a 350° pan and 120° tilt range of motion, and even offers up to 5 different presets so you can automatically go to specific areas that you have designated for viewing. From the iOS and Android apps you use fingure gestures to control the camera - simply swipe your figure to move the camera or pinch to zoom. The desktop software also allows similar control from the click of a mouse. It should be noted the Eye for Web browser application does not allow for control of the camera at this time.

Take Pictures and Capture Video in the Dark

If you're trying to keep an eye on things while you're away, you'll want to know what's going on day and night. The Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam features 12 infrared (IR) LEDs with IR Cut technology that will capture images in darkess down to 0.8 lux (equivalent to the amount of light from a full moon on a clear night) in full color - in other words, you'll have night vision! Images captured in lower than 0.8 lux will be in black and white.

    No Professional Installation Required

One of the more daunting tasks of installing an IP camera is the installation - that's a thing of the past. No more port forwarding or digging around and adjusting your router settings. It's Plug-n-Play - simply connect the camera to your wireless router, power it up and install the app on your smartphone or tablet. Then just follow a few steps (no programming at all) and in minutes you'll be able to disconnect the camera from the router and take full advantage of the wireless connection.

Automated Alert Notifcation, Recording and Screenshot

While other IP cameras limit you to remote viewing, the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam does much more. The IP camera has a built-in, motion sensor with adjustable sensitivity. There is also an external alarm relay input/output, so you can add a sensor (motion or other) to the alarm input, and when activated, it will trigger the alarm output - possibley to set off a siren or send a signal to your security or home automation system. Manage these settings from your smartphone or tablet via the Eye4 app or from your PC or laptop using the Eye4 For Windows desktop program. Deliver an email notification, capture a screenshot, or record video of activity when motion is detected or the alarm input is activated. Additional sensor, siren, security and home automation systems all available separately.

View 4 Cameras at One Time

One of the coolest features of the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam is the multi-camera view. From your smartphone or tablet, you can remotely view 4 cameras simultaneously. This eliminates the need to log in to different cameras from different apps or going back and forth between pages within an app to find a camera. You can see all the activity from a single screen. For advanced systems and users, the desktop software supports remote viewing of up to 81 cameras! When using a wireless system with multiple cameras, greater wireless bandwidth is required - remote access and streaming of four cameras simultaneaously will require a wireless router with a minuimum bandwidth of 450mbps.

    Talk and Listen

A built-in microphone and a built-in speaker allow you to remotely enjoy 2-way communication with someone at your home or office. While these are good for occasional use, the IP camera even has a 3.5mm microphone input and a 3.5mm audio output. So you can connect a professional microphone and hook the audio output up to an audio system for enhanced communication.

Additional Storage of Screenshots and Video

If storing images and videos on your smartphone, tablet or computer isn't enough, the Smarthome SELECT Vstarcam also provides you with the option of local storage. A built-in Micro SD card slot allows you to add up to 32GB of data directly on the camera. With the addition of a Micro SD card (sold separately), you have added piece of mind that your images and video can be backed up, just like a DVR..

    * Important Note: Smarthome recommends that you research your local and state laws related to audio and video surveillance before implementing this product. Also, if your network uses a wireless router provided by your cable or satellite provider this IP Camera (and most other IP camera's that allow remote access to your network) may not be compatible. This is because wireless routers provided by your cable or satellite company often restrict port forwarding and other wireless router configurations. Please contact your cable or satellite provider for information regarding this.

When I got an offer from Smarthome for the Vstarcam (T7838WIP) wireless IP camera with HD (720p) video for $85 it seemed like a good deal. I previously purchased a Wansview wireless IP camera with SD (480) video for $60 and expected a similar product with a higher resolution. The Vstarcam web-based interface is fairly standard, allowing you to enter wifi passwords, set up IP address and port and so on. Pan and tilt controls work as expected. The main reason I purchased this product was the HD video. You can apparently only get HD video in a few limited ways: 1) Using Internet Explorer with a special ActiveX control. 2) Using the manufacturer's proprietary smartphone app when connected to the same wifi router. 3) Using the manufacturer's proprietary Eye4 product when connected to the same wifi router. I have been able to get HD video using Internet Explorer with the special ActiveX control from inside the house on my internal network. I have been able to get an HD image/video stream on my iPhone 4S using the app from inside the house, when connected to the same wifi router. I haven't been able to use the Eye4 software because my desktop computer is on a downstream router on a different subnet from the camera and that apparently prevents the Eye4 software from connecting. When using any other browser the best video available is a very low quality down-sampled SD (480) stream. This video is substantially lower quality than the native SD video of the Wansview camera. I use iSpy open source camera security software to monitor and record from my cameras. By trial and error I discovered a URL that allows me to get an MJPEG stream from the camera but the stream I get is the same low quality down-sampled SD (480) and does not allow me to monitor sound as I can on the Wansview. I can use the pan and tilt controls with iSpy. The camera has a built-in email capability that sends a picture to a designated email address when motion is detected. Unfortunately the picture it sends is the same low quality down-sampled SD (480) image. The camera also only sends one picture when motion is detected (the Wansview sends several in a single message so you are more likely to see the motion that was detected). The camera accepts a Micro SD card (up to 32GB) for on-board recording. Presumably this would record HD video. I have not tried this. Since I purchased this camera for its HD capability and am unable to get an HD image in most of my preferred ways I can't recommend this camera for its HD image. Since the down-sampled SD image is poorer than my previous native SD camera I can't recommend this camera for its SD image. I'm hoping if I do get a Micro SD card and use it in this camera I will get good results that way.

PTZ under $100 is cool and all but the company really needs to update their app to be connected manually versus their cloud service which sucks horribly. Honestly I should have returned this and gone for the Insteon cam for the same price and at least had some standards to work with. Picture quality is decent but the whole package is nothing to rave about.
    JAMES -- raleigh, NC   3/13/2014
The cameras worked as advertised. They were pretty much plug and play, but configuration is extremely difficult due to lack of available documentation. I don't like having to log into an anonymous web site in order to configure my cameras and I don't like the idea that the camera images are available via the internet outside my home. There is no information on how to configure this "option". Also, the camera is supposed to be able to send alerts to an email address and although I plugged in the address, there is no information on how to configure the password for mail, so the cameras can't send the alarm picture. Otherwise, the cameras provide a very clear picture day and night and the software if easy to use.
FRANKLIN -- macomb twp., MI   3/13/2014
Excellent product, great HD, wireless works fine. Spend 10-12 hours setting up. Manuals and software NEED great improvement. Can't get alarm or motion to work.
    WILLIAM -- kennesaw, GA   3/13/2014
decent video quality, update rate could be higher. Audio is not available using standard Windows player.
    ALVIN -- candia, NH   3/9/2014
Great picture/video. Works best with VsCam app for Android phone. Scan the code on the bottom of the phone.
    Frank M -- rockford, IL   3/8/2014
I have purchased 4 of these cameras and I'm happy with the picture quality. The WiFi is stronger than my old D-Link camera. I'm getting 15fps or better on all cameras. Works good with BlueIris/BI for IOS, IP Cam Viewer, and LiveCams Pro. The built-in speaker is not very loud so you will need to add an amplified speaker. I'm very satisfied so far. I've only had them for 2 weeks. A model with a 3x zoom like the vStarCam T7833WIP would make it better.
    JOHN -- jackson, TN   2/23/2014
Works great and good picture. Easy to set up. One day Eye4 server was down, otherwise no negative thus far.
    RICHARD -- falmouth, ME   2/23/2014
This was very easy to set up and has great resolution even in low / no light. I do wish it had the ability to not only alarm on motion but to start recording. Overall a great camera.
KeeterJ -- vancouver, WA, US   1/29/2014
I own 11 webcams and 5 of them came from Smarthome. I was somewhat disappointed by the overall quality and features of the older Smarthome 75790, so I tried two of these Vstarcam T7838WIP’s. I regret my purchase and would return these if I had not waited too long to try them. Physically the camera is okay once you clean and adjust the tiny lens, but it makes a frequent clicking sound when it sees a change in image. That’s very annoying if you are near the camera. The firmware is pretty weak and has an amateur feel to it. The supporting Vstarcam web-based or PC client programs are even worse. Their iOS and Android support is also weak. I’m not at all impressed with this camera model or Vstarcam in general. They seem very “me too” and need to run faster to catch up to the other webcam makers. Note: Last week I bought a Smarthome 75799 a rebranded Foscam FI9818W. So far, I’m very pleased with it. It’s a step-up from the older Smarthome 75790 a Foscam FI8918W and has a much more polished set of features. I wish I could trade in my two T7838WIP’s for two more 75799’s
    FRANK X -- bloomingdale, IL   1/23/2014
This camera only needs one thing to make it a five star product…sound.
    ROBERT -- catonsville, MD   1/20/2014
Device performs exactly as expected. Connectivity via the iPhone App was seemless and without glitch.
    GLENN -- baltimore, MD   1/12/2014
Aside from the poor insturctions that accompany the product and on the monitoring website, once I got it working, it 's wonderful. I moderately to highly skilled at working with these things, so this may be a problem for others. We are using the Wifi capability and hope to hard wire it to minimize transmission delay.
    Jason -- California   12/18/2013
    Works just as advertised.
    Greg -- California   12/16/2013
My wife wanted a camera that she could use to check in on her dogs while she’s at work. I saw this camera and liked the idea of getting HD along with the ability to listen in and speak through the camera using our iphones. Not having installed a camera before, I was a bit apprehensive about how long it was going to take me to get it to work properly. I downloaded the software for their app from itunes and tried to connect but my first attempt failed. After replacing the piece of junk router my cable company provided with a Linksys wireless router, I was able to connect the camera wirelessly and control it with my iphone within a couple of minutes. The resolution is unbelievable and the interface was easy enough to use without reading the instructions. My wife learned how to use it in about a minute and she loves it. If you are having problems installing this camera I recommend two things: 1) make sure you download the correct app; and 2) Double check your router. Whatever Comcast installed in my home did not work with the camera but as soon as I replaced it with a quality router everything worked perfectly. I definitely recommend this product.
    Happy User -- California   12/11/2013
I installed one of these cameras to replace my $400 Panasonic surveillance camera. I never tried to use VStarCAM's software because my experience is that camera manufacturers make weak software. I use the Blue Iris software which cost $50 which works fine with the VStarCAM and hundreds of other cameras. The VStarCAM gives a better image than the old Panasonic camera which was 640x480. The night time sensitivity is about the same. The big advantages of Blue Iris software is that the motion detection works properly and the image can be viewed by any computer in the house or broadcast to any place on the web. Each morning I check yesterday's motion captures while eating breakfast. Now, with VStarCAM, I can see features on peoples faces. I'm buying a second VStarCAM
    Eddie -- visalia, California   12/10/2013
After reading some of the reviews I was a bit apprehensive, but I was not trying to use this product with another software or integrate it into something else other than what it is intended for. I simply wanted to setup a couple cameras in my house and 1 in my garage that I could remotely access from my phone, and for that purpose it was perfect. I was setup in minutes, all you have to do is install the app, add camera, scan the QR Code QR code readers are free and once it is recognized, go to the camera settings select your network and put in the password - that was it. I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I started messing around with some of the advanced features like recording motion sensing and there is a little bit of a learning curve - some tutorial videos would be helpful. Other than that this was exactly as described.
Tom -- toms river, NJ   12/9/2013
Camera was set up and working fine with the ability to see it from a smartphone. After two days, the remote capability no longer works.
HA -- ann arbor, MI   12/7/2013
I will have to agree with the other comments regarding compatibility - I tried to get this device/image to appear in my MobiLinc Pro software for the iPhone as my two other cameras work fine with this - one is a fixed AXIS IP camera, and the other is the Insteon Wireless Pan/Tilt/Night vision camera Item #75790. The higher resolution may be the problem, and it wasn't exactly Plug and Play like the 75790 was. The associated proprietary software is pretty robust, but my interest was something that can integrate with my existing software. I am sending this device back.
    DAVID -- sanford, NC   12/2/2013
Easy set up, works well with smart phones.
