Overview

  • Sensor detects moisture or leaks using 2 probes
  • Water sensor sends signal to INSTEON I/O Linc unit
  • Only one I/O Linc is needed for multiple water sensors

Essential Info

Catch leaks as soon as they start with a water-sensor system that triggers I/O Linc-connected lamps to flash. The INSTEON Water/Moisture Sensor can detect moisture on any non-conductive surface and send a signal to any INSTEON receiver in range via an I/O Linc (sold separately).

This product is also available with audio alert.

The Water/ Moisture Sensor for INSTEON I/O Linc connects to the I/O Linc unit via three leads on a 5-foot cable. The sensor should be placed such that the two probes firmly touch the surface to be protected. It is recommended that the use of the enclosed self adhesive wire tie and holder to correctly position the sensor and hold it in place. Care should be taken such that the sensor is in a position so that if moisture occurs in the area, it does not "run" or drip away from the sensor.

    1) Plug your I/O Linc into an un-switched outlet near your Water Sensor. (The I/O Linc LED will come on.)

    2) Place the sensor such that the two screw "legs" are on a common wet surface.

    3) Press and hold the I/O Linc Set button until it beeps (about 3 seconds.)

    4) Plug in your INSTEON Responder (receiver) in to an un-switched wall outlet.

    5) Now Press and hold the Set button on your INSTEON Responder (the device you wish to control) for at least 3 seconds. (The I/O Linc will beep and its Status LED will return to steady "on" to confirm linking.)

    6) Plug devices you wish to control in to your INSTEON Responder unit as required.

    7) Test the water sensor by removing and replacing the unit on the wet surface. Controlled devices will turn on and off respectively.

    8) Attach the wire tie and holder to the surface and verify that the wire cannot inadvertently injure anyone. Placing the sensor on a wet wash cloth will trigger the unit and allow a user to test the system.

Install instructions didn"t work. I had to put step 5 after step 6 it then worked fine. The product itself looks like it will do the job. My only question is what happens if the power goes out? Will it work without intervention since no one will be here to reset.

Works very well, easy to hook up and trigger insteon relay.

I just ordered my 3rd of these units. They aren't very complicated, but I realized that I have had my first unit for over 4 years. It has been kicked, dropped, rolled over by my refrigerator, soaked I think twice, and still works fine. I can't complain.

I soldered 3.5 mm plugs to the wires, bought a 3.5 mm Y splitter plus 18 foot extensions to wire two in parallel to the same IOLinc, and tested using a damp paper towel before permanent installation. I use them to monitor for roof leaks in my attic.

Easy peasy. I was used to X10 modules so I had to read a bit to make sure I set these up correctly but works very well and exactly what I needed. I wish it had a local audio alarm in it as well but still this was worth the effort/ price.
Rich -- cedar rapids, Iowa   8/26/2010
    No issues, works well.

I had the previous X10 style of these water sensors and they are still working years later, thus I got the same ones for use with my Insteon network. I am always hesitant to get products that are brand new, but these work well. In general, Smarthome stuff is usually bulletproof.
    Dirk -- monteray, CA   7/1/2010
Love being able to use multiple water sensors with one I/O linc. Makes going the Insteon path easier. Don't know how long I can extend the wires but so far it is all the way around the room with them and still works great.
