Essential Info

The X10 Variable Temperature Sensor provides a way to sense temperatures and trigger X10 devices based on user settings. It interfaces to a standard X10 Powerflash Interface, sold separately, and supports a temperature range from approximately 0° F - 120° F.

The sensor is completely self contained and uses a solid state transducer preset at the factory. There are three leads extending from the sensor. Depending on your application, the user selection of leads determines turning on or off devices based on whether the temperature is hotter than the set value or cooler than the set value. The user selects two leads, sets the approximate temperature using a small screwdriver, connects the sensor to the Powerflash terminals, plugs in the wall transformer, and places the sensor in the appropriate location.

Operations
For best results, let the sensor sit in the environment for 1 hour prior to use in order to allow the temperature to stabilize and begin normal operation. For residential use only.

Modes
1) Turns on all Lamp modules set to the same house code as the Powerflash. Turns on Appliance modules set to the same house and unit code as the Powerflash. After the temperature returns to normal, all modules set to the same house and unit code will be turned off.
2) Flashes all lamp modules set to the same house code. If temperature returns to normal, all lights remain on.
3) Turns on Lamp and Appliance modules set to the same house code and unit code as the interface. After the temperature returns to normal it will turn these same modules off.

So far I have had issues with this unit when the outside temp reaches the setpoint. The unit sends many off / on signals in a row like it cannot decide what to do. Since the unit is controlling my pool pump I am concerned that it could damage the pump.

Recommended by a buddy who has I swear 100 different X10 devices in his house.... Anyway, it plugs in and hooked up to my Powerflash without any issues. It says to wait an hour for the temp to stabilize but mine was at room temperature in about 10 min. I set the temp and let it run... works like I expected and no issues. If you want to use X10 and not Insteon, this is the least costly option I have found that works.

I don't know much about X10 so I bought with some concern. Smarthome tech support was fine although in the end I didn't need it. Anyway, if you are not tech savvy, no problem. This worked first time for me and I haven't had any problems.

I was concerned about purchasing after reading a few of these reviews. I got one and it has worked flawlessly don't know if I got lucky on which unit I received or it is the way I am using them. therm/ switch My recommendation to others is that if you have issues, contact the manufacturer on their web site. I had a detailed question and they helped me resolve it right away and made sure it worked properly for me.

The good: It works, marginally. The bad: it's finicky, fiddly & very inaccurate. The lowdown: My first one appears to have been defective. The replacement -- sent very quickly by SmartHome, thank you very much -- appears to work; however, after allowing the unit to stabilize for an hour per directions, setting the effective temperature appears to be pointless. I want the device to trigger a fan to come on at about 80 degrees F. It's top temperature limit seems to be somewhere in the 70-72 degree range rather than the advertised 120 degrees. I plan to return it and buy a $20 manual, mechanical thermostat intended for use with a furnace & air conditioner.

This thing is pretty slick. I had another unit from Smarthome that worked fine, but had to be programmed with another X10 device. I am pretty technical and it still was a test of patience. This was very easy. Pick hotter or colder than set-point and then set the temp. I like that the website allowed me to look at the instructions before I purchased.

I also use mine to control a pool pump, but haven't had any issues. This unit is accurate, so the hysteresis is small, appears to be only 2 degrees or so. Settings on the Powerflash and placement of the sensor are important so that there is not chatter. The cooling or warming effect of the pump as well as a noisy ground could affect it I imagine.
