Overview

  • Sensor detects moisture or leaks using 2 probes
  • Water sensor sends signal to X10 Powerflash module
  • Set connected X10 lamps to react in any of 3 ways
  • Attach multiple sensors together in parallel (additional sensors sold separately)

Essential Info

Catch leaks as soon as they start with a water-sensor system that triggers X10-connected lamps to flash. The X10 Water/Moisture Sensor can detect moisture on any non-conductive surface and send a signal to any X10 receiver in range via an X10 Powerflash module (sold separately).

The X10 Water/Moisture Sensor connects to the Powerflash module via two leads on a 5-foot cable. Place the sensor so that the two probes touch the surface to be protected using the included self-adhesive wire tie and holder to position the sensor in your desired location.

When the X10 Water/Moisture Sensor detects moisture on the surface it's monitoring, the Powerflash module will set one of three events in motion, as determined by the user:

    1) All lamp modules (sold separately) set to the same house code as the Powerflash will turn on, and all appliance modules (sold separately) set to the same house and unit code as the Powerflash will turn on. Appliance modules will turn off when the moisture is removed, lamp modules will stay on.

    2) All lamp modules set to the same house code as the Powerflash will flash. All will remain on when moisture is removed.

    3) All lamp and appliance modules set to the same house and unit code as the interface will turn on. All will turn off when moisture is removed.

This item was poorly manufactured. The circuit within the sensor was not potted and the internal connections broke. The lugs at the end of the cable were of the wrong size for the X10 unit and the wires did not have sufficient strain relief. They too broke. I had to re-construct the entire unit to make it usable.
CURVED ARROW -- princeton, NJ   3/23/2011
I would avoid purchasing this. I have purchased two of them. The first never worked and the second worked briefly and then it too failed. Although this appeared to be an inexpensive solution, it turned out to be like buying the cheap tool before you buy the more expensive one in the end. Save yourself the trip.
    JOHN -- newburgh, IN   3/21/2011
Works but seems significantly over-priced and is inconvenient since it has a short, bulky "cord" (really two cords) and the need for a separate power supply.
    NOEL -- minneapolis, MN   10/7/2010
Cable a little short but works as advertised.
Vinny Alegro -- paterson, NJ   5/16/2012
I have probably installed 30 of these over the past 4 years. We plumbers get lots of requests ... after we repair the leak. I have never had one fail and my customers have liked them. I like they because they are very small and can fit anywhere. Most leaks don't start in wide open expanses. Cords and cabling haven't been a problem except at one old place that didn't have any power sockets anywhere, we fixed that with a short extension cord. I usually check them if we get called back to a customer for a repair or change and even the oldest ones under inches of dust! are still working great. They are bulletproof as far as I can tell and my assistant plumbers and plumber journeymen are not gentle on stuff....
Bill Penzer -- canyon lakes, CA   5/5/2012
I have 4 of these. This one goes under the connections to my water softener. Works great. Fork terminals are the right size for my Powerflash and no issues. I learned of these on Twitter and they are the weapon of choice for the regular members on-line. I replaced other options because I got tired of having to put in new batteries all the time and they said these last forever. my first two have.
Terry Griego -- denver, CO   1/12/2012
Great unit, plug and play. This is my third and my first one from 2006 ? still works fine. No issues.
Felix Bridges -- santa monica, CA   11/11/2011
Used underneath garage refrigerator and kids sink. Works fine. Easy install.
Larry Moffett -- providence, RI   9/5/2011
Placed under my water heater but got triggered by my AC unit condensation line getting clogged! Worked perfectly and had been sitting there for at least 5 years without a false trigger. No complaints here and it was a good purchase.
Bob Blackford -- tampa bay, FL   7/29/2011
Put one under each water heater we have twoand our summer home. I have a metal drain tray so put down a piece of paper in between. I ran some tests and it works well. It has been in for about 3 months now and no false triggers. No issues and would recommend.
    Kent -- westchester, CA   7/15/2011
I have bought 5 of these over the last 8 years, every one of them is still working perfectly. We have dropped and twisted them and one got submerged once, dried out and still works great. Besides X10 light switches and one telephone responder, every item purchased from Smarthome is still working. Tech support is good as well.
Kris -- imperial beach, CA   7/6/2011
Perfect. Got here quickly and had it up and tested in a just a few minutes. Even for non-techie, I found it straightforward and without drama...
Kirk Giles -- marion, Indiana   3/16/2010
Placed under my house to tell me if snow melt or runoff is getting in there. Worked perfectly. The ground underneath is sloped so I am getting a few more for multiple coverage. I like the Insteon system, but X10 is still far less expensive and works fine.
Clay Thompson -- oswego, NY   1/16/2010
I use these throughout my cabin, just added a new bathroom and put one in there. I have had real good luck with them. I used to have wireless ones but they never had the range or would get some kind of funky jamming from other signals ??? and I knew the batteries would run out when I wasn't there.. Anyway, tech support is good but I rarely need it. I don't know if there are cheaper places to by these, but I never have had any issues getting them here so will continue with Smarthome.
    Roger -- lexington, VA   10/3/2009
Worked well. Just the right amount of sensitivity. Best price and the only place I have found to buy them.
Nate -- oklahoma city, OK   5/28/2009
Under the indoor pump and presto. Works well.
    Rick -- minneapolis, Minnesota   4/24/2009
Perfect. Good Sensitivity and clean install. Much better than wireless units. Smarthome phone support was also good when I had a question.
John Stover -- falls church, VA   3/24/2009
Nice product, good support. Integrated well in to my x10 systems.
Richard Allen -- memphis, TN   1/6/2009
Installed mine 2 years ago and forgot about them. One triggered last week. I went and checked...sure enough, the bib from a water heater drain had started to leak. What a GREAT early catch. I cleaned and tightened the bib and everything is fine. These paid for themselves and prevented me SO much grief. Thanks Smarthome.
Ben -- saratoga springs, NY   10/9/2008
I put these all over my house. If any trigger, they turn a night light on in the corner of my family room. I have one of the network cameras pointed at it. Whenever I am on travel, I can remotely check the camera and know that all is well at home. Slick.
