We have had this alarm for 8 years. This summer we replaced the 600ft of wire with outdoor low voltage wire and have eliminated ALL false alarms from lightening. The wire that comes with the product does not appear to be rated for outdoor, underground. Otherwise, we love the alarm. Diana Indiana

the first one had a disconnected wire on the circuit board and Smarthome replaced it and the second worked great.

This thing works well, but be careful with extending the wire.. the wire you use has to be shielded, and connections have to be done very well... the connection thing made by the company didnt work (I would suggest that you strip the wires in the splice thing to get it to work, even though it says not to strip them.) My sister was able to use an unshielded Cat 5 to extend it a little, but I dont recommend this as I had alot of trouble with unshielded wire before finally connecting a shielded wire with my own splice.

What neat device. Works on vehicles but will not go off on animals going by which we have alot of.

Works perfectly! It just requires a little fine-tuning. I have a shorter driveway and vehicles from the road were activating it. I moved it from the side of my driveway to the middle (a few inches under the blacktop). I dug a hole along side my driveway and inserted a PVC pipe under the macadam. Then I pushed the probe into the pipe. It wasn’t too difficult. I used the PVC pipe as a horizontal "posthole digger" to clear a path for the pipe. Having the detector directly under a passing vehicle allowed me to greatly reduce the sensitivity, and in turn eliminate all false alarms (including the semi-frequent lightning detection). Thunderstorms no longer set it off, the only thing that does are vehicles entering my driveway. It’s worth the money. You get what you pay for.

This driveway sensor is GREAT! I bought mine from SmartHome about 9 years ago and it has worked perfectly everyday since then. My house is back a 1/4 mile driveway in the woods with no close neighbors and I like knowing someone is coming up the drive. The only problem I ever had was a wire corrosion problem out at the sensor after about 5 years, but it wasn't the product's fault since I had cut the molded cable off and spliced it to an existing 14-2 wire I had previously buried for a sensor before I knew what kind I was getting. It is running on a 1000 feet of standard 14-2 UMB. It does tend to pick up lightning anywhere within about 20 miles, but I like the early storm warning. I unplug it if the storm is moving too slowly. When I forget to plug it back in, it is strange having someone just show up at the door without the 1 minute warning the sensor normally provides. I love it and will buy another if this one ever fails, which appears to be unlikely. This is one of those devices that actually works like it is supposed to and does not have exagerated claims about what is "should be able to do". This things works better than they say it should.

The system seems to work well, even thought its picking up our water pump too.
LARRY -- millers creek, NC   12/30/2004
    very well

I am not only a homeowner but also a Smart Home vendor for the Infoplate, recessed wall plate. I bought this unit for that early notification when someone came up my drive. But here is a hint; I used one set of the relay contacts to interface with my Nutone intercom system with the doorbell option installed. So now it thinks someone is ringing the rear bell and will sound through the home at all stations day or night. Upstairs, downstairs, garage. You know when someone is coming, or going, maybe with your car that should not have it, LOL! Anyway, great product and it even detects a close lightning strike, no kidding. If lightning is very close, it will detect the electromagnetic effect and sound off.

Worked as described. No p[roblems with installation and operation.
