Essential Info

The Smarthome Hidden IR Repeater System allows you to use an existing infrared (IR) remote control to operate up to eight audio/video (A/V) components located behind closed doors or walls in an entertainment cabinet or equipment closet. The built-in IR distribution technology gives you the ability to conceal, yet still control, bulky electronic equipment such as a cable or satellite TV receiver, stereo receiver or amplifier, CD player, DVD player, Blu-ray player, or virtually any component controlled by an IR signal. The system uses an IR receiver to take in the IR signals from an existing remote control and distribute those signals via IR emitters to A/V components. No more leaving cabinet doors open or struggling to remotely access your hidden equipment, you'll be able to control up to eight A/V components from up to 40 feet away with extreme reliability.

IR Repeater - Repeats Remote Control Signals to Another Room

Certain brands have been known not to work or have limited functionality including Scientific Atlanta, AT&T, U-Verse, Verizon FIOS and Direct TV.

This new Hidden IR Repeater System features the following improvements over the previous model:
    • The IR receiver has an operating distance of 40 feet (formerly 30 feet)
    • There are only four dual emitters (instead of eight single emitters), making it easier to manage cables
    • The IR receiver has a compact, flat form factor (formerly large and round) for easier mounting
    • The IR emitters connect to the main hub via a 1/8" mini jack plug
    • The IR receiver connects to the main hub via a 4-pin DIN connector
    • A feedback LED indicator light has been built-in to the IR receiver (instead of being a separate component to plug in), making it easier to manage cables
    Easy Setup
This home theater accessory is easy to use and sets up in minutes, your friends will think you had a pro install it! Start by mounting the Hidden IR repeater box in your equipment cabinet using the included Velcro tape. Plug the 1/8" mini jack plug end of the emitters into the repeater box and attach the other end (the emitters) to the IR window of each A/V component you wish to control. Next, plug the 4-pin DIN connector from the IR receiver into the repeater box and then place the other end (the IR receiver) in a location where it can receive direct line-of-sight signals from your IR remote control(s). Ideally this will be on a shelf or on an exposed part of the cabinet, the black color helps it hide beneath equipment or back in the shadows. Double sided tape has been pre-installed on the IR emitters and the IR receiver to make this process easier. That's it, now you can use your A/V remote control as usual, changing channels, scrolling through your CD, DVD or Blu-ray disk, all while the they are hidden from view. As an added feature, a confirmation LED indicator light has been built into the IR receiver to let you know when the system has received a remote control command.

The included emitters can control many different A/V components. They're made of material that is transparent to IR light, so commands can still pass directly to individual components if desired. Each emitter cord is approximately six feet in length, with two emitters split off the of end; the emitter wires can be peeled away from each other to allow for a variety of mounting positions. If your equipment is located in a closet or rack more than six feet away from your monitor, add a 50 Foot IR Emitter Extension Cable to each emitter cable for added distance; two can be used for a distance up to 100 feet.

Please Note: Placing two IR emitters on the same component will not improve performance.

Although not designed to reject interference from plasma or LCD TVs, you can work around this by installing the IR receiver eye in an area that isn't exposed to the TV screen - at the back of a bookshelf, on the wall below or next to the TV - somewhere the eye can't "see" the TV image. Just make sure you still have a direct line of sight from the eye to your normal seating position.

    System Notes
    • Some A/V components, such as high-powered amplifiers and receiver, may require additional ventilation and will overheat in an enclosed cabinet and might require a cooling fan.
    • Protect the IR receiver from plasma screens and devices that emit too much low-frequency RF or an excess of ambient light, including direct sunlight, floodlights, and some halogen or fluorescent lamps
    • Avoid allowing IR emitter cables to block equipment doors and slots that may need to be opened from time to time
    • You'll enjoy increased range in dimmer applications, as this IR system has more sensitivity with less ambient light
    • If you prefer, attach an IR emitter to a shelf so that it is facing the component's IR eye and is within 3 inches of the eye. This will allow IR control without attaching the IR emitter directly to the component
    • Do not attempt to open the power supply or IR repeater box. Doing so will void your warranty
    • The Hidden IR is not weather-resistant. Do not expose this system to moisture
    • A 120 volt AC to 12 volt DC adapter is included. For use in 220/240 volt countries, use a locally obtained 220/240 VAC to 12 volt DC, 100 mA adapter

Great product. Easy to install, and it works great. Even on an older Sansui receiver.
Barry -- mission viejo, California   6/5/2013
Poor sensitivity. Will have to try something else. Maybe I'm lazy, but I have to get out of my easy chair to receive full functionality from cable box. The eye doesn't seem to be very consistent...it blinks and acts as if it's receiving a signal but quite often doesn't do anything.
DAN -- flower mound, TX   5/23/2013
Works great, even better than expected. It's sensitive enough that when mounted 6'-7' up on the wall at the back of my theater room, I can point my remote forward toward the screen and use the IR signal reflected from the screen at the front of my theater room to control the equipment at the back without having to position the receiving eye near the front of the room. It’s really convenient and reliable. This is my second unit. The other is used for my daily-use entertainment center and my wife loves the reliability its brought to the control of that system.
    FRED -- indianapolis, IN   5/11/2013
    Easily installed. Works very well.
    DONALD -- columbia, MO   5/6/2013
Performance exceeds expectations. The repeater out performs direct inputs. Installation was easy.

Works for some devices don't work for some device! It didn't work for Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HDC / Comcast xfinity DVRs both models. Check for IR frequency before purchasing it, several comments in AV Forum site for the reason it don't work. Smarthome shouldn't decisive customer but should clearly state the IR frequency range as well as known device that wan't work at least that don't work such as U-verse, comcast, DirectTV - All major US Cable DVRs - let me say, I only confirm it don't work for Comcast The 50' extension cable Item# 8186. Lot is written that it don't work with Smarthome IR. It does work but one has to push male end of the cable in IR repeater box, the other end bit hard since the plastic comes in a way for perfect connection. Some people peel some plastic off, I just pushed hard, it works. I am able to automate entire activity for my netflix Vizio TV, Pioneer AV receiver and Sony Blu Ray, no success when it comes to xfinity DVR. I may have to look for Xantech IR repeater for xfinity DVR.

Only complaint is that the glue to hold the receiver and transmitters is not very strong.
    ROCC -- whitestone, NY   3/7/2013
Every well discribed product made it simple for me to order
Emil -- long island, NY   3/5/2013
Does not work well with Cablevision samsung hd box or roku box.Very disappointed.
    THOMAS -- woodinville, WA   2/21/2013
I did not get a chance to test the product. When design for entertainment center was completed, I determined that the repeater system was not needed. Product was returned unopened. Rating is based on speed of delivery and ease of ordering.
JASON -- lake forest, CA   2/19/2013
Works good, but not 100% every time. For the price it works good enough and I would recommend it.
    JON -- bedford, NH   2/8/2013
Easy to hookup. But suffers from wide field of view. Great straight on.
    JON -- bedford, NH   2/2/2013
First order parts arrived broken. SmartHome replaced unit and took a long time. Sticky emitters sometimes do not stick well.
    ALLYN -- medford, NJ   1/28/2013
Did not work with Comcast DVR box (CISCO)
    STACY -- alpharetta, GA   1/23/2013
    Works excellent...shipping fast!
    DANIEL -- richmond, TX   1/21/2013
Easy setup, good instructions, took less than two minutes to setup. Unfortunately it didn't work with my cable box which is a Cisco box from Comcast. I tried moving the IR reciever to a couple of different spots but couldn't get it to work. I returned the product and Smarthome paid for the return postage.
    DAVID -- lexington, KY   1/18/2013
The IR repeater system works well for the most part. Like other reviewers have said, it would be nice to have a longer cord for the main receiver but it all works well enough. Some IR commands do not seem to need repeating from the remote which seems strange, and O have two Xbox 360 consoles and only one will respond to commands which seems very strange to me. A great purchase overall.
    JON -- philadelphia, PA   1/17/2013
Works well right out of the box, easy set up. Good Value. My only comment: The power adapter / plug is one of the older, heavier types that get warm - so I suspect it has a higher vampire power draw than newer, light weight versions of the same thing - but I haven't plugged it into a Kill-a-watt yet to test it.
    RAYMOND -- ottawa, ON   1/17/2013
Not a very good IR receiver. Angles are limited and chances of signal getting through is < 70%
    MikeG -- Chicago   12/30/2012
Works great with TiVo Series 3 after a couple of tweaks. First, a few peculiar details about ordering and price. I ordered it from the Smarthome site, which has a Pay With Amazon payment option, that I chose, since it was the quickest and easiest. It was delivered in a few days as promised and I am as happy with Smarthome's service as I am with Amazon's. But here are the anomalies: The Smarthome price on its site was $40 I'm rounding all prices for simplicity, but when I paid for it the price was shown as $30. It was right around Xmas, when many prices go crazy, so I assume it was a short term price special. BUT as of today 12/30/2012, the price on the Smarthome site is still shown as $40, the Amazon price, as sold BY Amazon, is $49, and the Smarthome price as shown in two different places on the Amazon site is $40 AND $49! I'm sure those prices will change, and there is no way I know of I will be able to prove it in the future, but I've confirmed numerous times what I am writing is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!! I don't understand the pricing goofiness. As to the repeater device: When I first installed it, it worked intermittently and would freeze up after a short time, i.e., stop working at all. The Repeater can control 8 separate boxes, but I am only using it with one, the TiVo I mentioned above, but I am not using it on a hidden TiVo in a cabinet. My TiVo box is in a low open shelf TV table at the wall past the foot of our bed, and the line-of-sight from the remote to the TiVo is obstructed by the bed clothes and the end of our mattress, especially when elevated by a pillow or our feet, so we had to raise the remote about 3-4 feet in the air and point it downward to make it work, which was frustrating my wife, to say the least. I figured a high mounted IR repeater receiver would do the trick, and it eventually did, with the tweaks. The instructions say to find the IR Infrared eye on the component you want to control, saying to shine a flashlight into the front of the component and describing it as a small red disk. I couldn't see a small red disk so I contacted TiVo support by a chat and was quickly told the IR eye is at the right of the front panel window. When I looked with a flashlight I couldn't find an eye, but there is a one-half inch square. Turns out I had the small emitter in the wrong place, which worked, but not very well, but when I relocated the emitter over the eye/square, I encountered the same intermittent operation/freeze-up problem. I eventually unscientifically theorized the IR beam from the remote control was confusing the TiVo box because it was causing the IR signal to arrive at the box through the repeater emitter AND from the remote directly, the two signals getting there a microsecond apart. I have no idea if my theory is correct, but I hung a folded piece of cardboard over the front of the TiVo, covering the square IR eye so the IR signal from the remote can't reach it, and all I can say IT WORKS!! So
