Essential Info

The CurrentWerks USB Outlet Duo 2 features two powerful in-wall USB charging ports delivering 16 Watts of output power from a standard 110V wall outlet. The Duo's advanced power management design gives the consumer a total of four charging solutions, two USB charging ports and two standard US/CAN sockets from a single wall outlet. This makes the Duo the second most powerful in-wall charging solution available in the market today, surpassed only by the CurrentWerks Quattro.

No more carrying around bulky USB adapters or powering up a computer to charge cell phones, music players, PDAs, or any other USB-powered device. All you will need is a USB cable to connect to the one of two USB ports on this unit. This energy-efficient unit uses less energy than traditional chargers, leading to savings in electricity costs. In addition to the USB ports, this unit also features two standard UL listed tamper resistant 15 Amp electrical outlets.

The CurrentWerks USB Outlet Duo is also available in Ivory and Light Almond or with a Standard Outlet Design, each sold separately.

I wrote a review several weeks ago - very detailed, with suggested design improvement ideas (I'm a design engineer). But since my review was critical, yet constructive, Smarthome apparently decided to NOT publish it. Bottom line: it's too big to fit in a standard outlet box, and I explained how that could be solved. Will this review get published? I doubt it.

As an electrical design engineer, I have to give this product an A for design concept, but an F for the final physical product. It consists of a separate 5 volt DC power supply module piggy-backed onto a standard AC duplex outlet. As mentioned by other reviewers, the resulting assembly is TOO BIG to fit in a standard electrical box - in all three dimensions. First, I had to remove the 2 screws and metal brackets holding the module to the back of the AC outlet to have it fit vertically this can potentially mess up the alignment of the USB sockets with the front plate. Then I had to cut out the rear wire entry sections of the electrical box to accommodate the depth of the unit. The width does not allow for anything thicker than a single wire on the sides. Fortunately, I had only one set of wires coming into the box, and I connected them directly to the unit, removing the supplied jumper wires and NOT using the wire nuts. So the unit did fit - barely. If there had been other wires, it would have been next to impossible to install. I feel sorry for anyone trying to install this who does NOT have electrical and/or mechanical experience! Even though I was able to make it work, I would not go through this again. My suggestion, as a designer, would be to integrate the 5V USB supply into the duplex outlet, even if it means a reduction in output current. It can be done - the proof is in the fact that USB chargers about the size of an AC plug can be purchased for about $12, and work just fine. Bottom Line: BAD DESIGN / WASTE OF MONEY.

Won't fit into a standard wall box. Useless.

Great product! I want to put these everywhere in my house after buying 1!
JC-PVAZ -- scottsdale, AZ   6/9/2012
Absolute crap. It's too big for any standard outlet in my house. If you have a 2-bay box and can mount it in the middle, it might work. There isn't enough clearance for wires on the side and back even if you took a file and tried to file down the housing so it would insert into the box.
