The RIBD2421C by Functional Devices Inc. is one of their many Pilot Series relays. This unit specifically, is a single pole, double throw timer relay housed in a weatherproof enclosure. The Pilot Series relays have been configured with all of the essential components saving the installer the time and hassle of having to piece them all together themselves. Having to assemble these components on the job (relay, LED indicator, socket mounting rail, transient protection, and housing) may become an issue if a component is missing, damaged, or defective. By saving you time it is saving you money. Time you would have normally spent assembling them at a shop or on a job site, is now open to complete more jobs.
This item is intended to power load 2 for a designated period of time after load 1 has been switched off. HVAC applications are very common for this item. For example, keeping a circulating fan running after a thermostat controlled HVAC system has shut off. This can be very useful in a home with hot or cold spots. The temperature sensor for the HVAC system may trigger it to shut off while certain parts of the home have not been completely cooled or warmed. The sensor is accurately responding it is just not monitoring enough space to know it is failing to create a constant temperature throughout the entire home. Having a fan continuing to circulate the air gives you a much better chance of getting your entire house comfortably sustaining a constant temperature.
