Essential Info

The cost and environmental benefits of rechargeable batteries have been taken a step further with the Solar Powered Ni-MH/Ni-Cd Battery Charger. Until now, charging batteries has required you to plug in a charger, using electricity. This charger harnesses the power of sunlight and converts it into energy that will reenergize Ni-MH and Ni-Cd rechargeable batteries, completely eliminating the use of electricity, making this a truly environmental product. It will facilitate 11 different pairs of batteries, from standard cylinder shaped batteries (AA, AAA, C and D sizes) to gum shaped batteries. The weather resistant housing allows you to put this outside and an adjustable angle stand let's you get the best possible position to face the sun. Once the charger is in position, simply check on the charge meter to see how much time there is remaining for a full charge. Now you can run any battery powered device to your hearts content and let the sun power up your rechargeable batteries for free when they are drained.

Important Note: Re-charging time will vary depending upon the strength of the sunlight or the level to which the batteries have been discharged.

    Charging
The charger is designed to charge two pieces of the same size and same brand battery only as mixing batteries will cause different resistance adversely affecting the output of the charger.

    Ni-MH and Ni-Cd Rechargeable Batteries
The Solar Powered Battery Charger is designed to recharge both Ni-MH batteries and Ni-Cd batteries. While each battery type supplies virtually the same voltage, Ni-MH batteries will greatly out-perform standard Ni-Cd batteries in high-drain application as the Ni-MH battery usually has about twice to three times the energy storage capacity of the Ni-Cd battery. A Ni-MH battery can be recharged at anytime without affecting battery life while the Ni-Cd must be fully discharged before recharging. Additionally, the Ni-Cd battery contains Cadmium which is hazardous to the environment.

    Great!
ERIC -- lauderdale lakes, FL   11/18/2011
I gave this 3 stars, instead of 5, because I haven't actually tried it yet. It rains off and on, where I live, and this solar charger is 'weather resistant' not weather proof. However... it appears to be in good working order.
    CARLOS -- hickory, NC   7/4/2011
Works as advertised. Charges AA Batteries just fine. Have not tested other batteries as yet.
    AMIEL -- miami, FL   5/23/2011
Very good product and excellent costumer service from Smarthome
    AMIEL -- miami, FL   5/7/2011
Easy to use. Does the job well. Best price. Customer service was great. Would buy more items from Smarthome in the future.
    CHRISTIAN P. -- loma linda, CA   4/30/2011
The first thing that I did after receiving this charger was to throw a couple of ten year old NiCad D cells into it, and place the unit out in full sunlight. 3 hours later They were fully charged! I can wait to try charging my Eneloops with it.
    JONATHAN -- stamford, CT   4/21/2011
I like the meter. It gives you an idea of how much electricity the unit is producing. When there is more sun, the needle swings to the right. When there is less sun, the needle swings to the right. It is a useful tool.
EMILY -- chapel hill, NC   4/15/2011
It works and charged my batteries. I like it.
    FRED -- stanford, KY   3/24/2011
I talked with C. Crane and they told me this charger would not recharge NiCd batteries. Smarthome and Amazon were both good to work with and resolved my issue.
RANDY -- san francisco, CA   3/10/2011
I LIKE THE CONSTRUCTION IS VERY GOOD. IT IS SMALL AND LIGHTWEIGHT. I BOUGHT IT TO TAKE WITH ME ON BICYCLE TOURS AS ONE CAN GO THROUGH QUITE A FEW BATTERIES FOR VARIOUS LIGHTS. I PLAN ON STRAPPING IT TO THE REAR RACK SO I CAN CHARGE ALL DAY WHILE RIDING. I WISH IT HELD MORE AA AND AAA BATTERIES. IF IT DID I WOULD GIVE IT AN EXCELLENT RATING.
MARY ANN -- fallon, NV   2/24/2011
    works great
    JON T -- plattsburgh, NY   2/21/2011
Solar Charger needs to charge even on cloudy days
    MARY -- henderson, NV   1/27/2011
works great, just wish it had more room for AA
    R -- greensboro, NC   12/19/2010
I haven't tried it yet but shipped quickly and appears to be in new shape.
    T.A. -- reston, VA   11/9/2010
takes too long to charge batteries and only 2 at a time
    NORM -- paducah, TX   10/18/2010
I have not had a chance to actually use it yet. I wish it could charge cell phones and mp3 players as well. It looks nice however and I'll give it a 4 star for the time being.
    JIMMY F. -- mountain home, AR   10/14/2010
No idea about how or if it is working. It was sent to the remote New Guinea wilderness to power a couple of emergency flashlights. No other electrical power is available there except other small photocell or fuel-dependent devices so it has to work. It is on a long-term assignment and we are hoping for the best. Limited communication with the outside prevents a factual review.
    DREW -- chantilly, VA   10/9/2010
does what it supposed to do.
    GREG -- vallejo, CA   8/2/2010
Works better than expected. The solar panel has a bubble-like coating that allows it to work even at wide angles from the sun so no need to reorient the panel during the day. I found it's better to use inside at a window rather than leave it outside (in the summer) where it can overheat. The unit doesn't have any real way to tell you when the batteries are charged and likely doesn't prevent overcharging but the current is small enough that it shouldn't be an issue. I use a volt meter to check the charge to know when they're done. Otherwise you can roughly calculate the amount of time they'll need in the sun and just leave them in a bit longer to be sure.
MR JOHN F DOWD -- auburn, MA   4/25/2010
Received very timely. Nice charger. Good transaction .
