Overview

  • Mechanism stops access to outlet contacts unless a two-prong plug is inserted
  • GFCI is automatically tested every time the RESET button is pushed

Essential Info

Ensure your safety and the safety of your family by using in-wall receptacles that bock access to the each outlet. No longer do you have to worry about the little ones sticking something like a key or a hairpin in an outlet and suffering a traumatic shock. The Leviton Tamper Resistant GFCI Decora Duplex Receptacle Outlets have a built in shutter that prevents anything from going in unless both contacts are properly used with a two-prong plug. This outlet also has a built-in ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) that provides superior resistance to electrical surges and over-voltages. It is equipped with convenient feed-through wiring that not only protects the outlet it's built into, but all of the outlets on the same circuit; the easiest way to prevent shocks caused by faulty wiring or appliances. The internal safety device and GFCI make this an ideal safety product for your home.

Once this device has been installed, you can add more tamper resistant receptacle outlets, sold separately, on the same circuit without the GFCI.

    SmartLockPRO
The SmartLockPRO receptacle automatically tests the GFCI every time the RESET button is pushed. The GFCI will not reset if the GFCI circuit is not functioning properly. If the SmartLockPRO receptacle can no longer provide GFCI protection, it will not reset and no power is supplied to the face or downstream receptacles. SmartLockPRO diagnoses line-load reversal upon installation. It will not reset if miss-wired. Green LED indicator light alerts you of line-load reversal when installing.

This product is a good idea, but only if you know the trick to using it, something that most electricians or contractors forget to tell you. There is no problem if you try to insert a three-pronged plug, but if you try to use a two-pronged plug, it most likely will not work. That is because you have to know that it is required that both prongs be inserted into the slots exactly together, not one slightly earlier than the other. If your timing is off, the plug just will not go in. However, with a little practice, you can master this and impress your friends. I had a set of these installed in my kitchen just before Thanksgiving and because of my ignorance, just could not get the mixer plugged. The result was that we had to mix the batter in the bathroom, since that had both a counter and an older type, non-tamper-resistant outlet.
