Ours has been working flawlessly for over a year with only minor adjustments. For anyone who has problems with their batteries, do not worry. These are common batteries and are available at battery specialty stores such as Batteries Plus for less than $30 for two.

DOORMATE CEASED OPERATIONS as of today July 12, 2007. Just called to get a replacement battery under warranty and was informed of such. buy your spare parts now, especially batteries. You do have to be mechanically inclined to "tweak" this along the way, but what a difference it has made with the in's and out's all day by the dog and no accidents because we didn't get up early enough. We put it on a timer to open at 5:00 am and go off at night at 10:30 (just have to make sure the dog is in before 10:30!).

Now with 3+ years of experience under my belt. If you are not mechanically inclined, this door could be a challange. Have burnt up 5 circuit boards (gets expensive). They replaced one under warantee and I fixed 2 that burnt out. They have a weak spot (the Mosfets burn out). Have had to replace the main drive gear at least 6 times, and have gone through 3 end plates. When it is working, it is great. Drives the dogs nuts when not working. Customer service for doormate is difficult to get to respond to emails. Mel Cohen is great at the company though. Feel doormate needs to increase part durability
VICKIE -- west bend, WI   2/13/2007
We love it . But had to diconnet it from the door . As the cold sub -0 weather was making the door open all by its self . Had to shut down and diconnet . Tell weather gets warmer . But it works well . THANK YOU
VICKIE -- west bend, WI   2/13/2007
Works well . But when the dogs dont have the sensor on the ID chip in there neck will open the door . So have to make sure it is also turned off .
    DIANE -- maricopa, AZ   2/2/2007
    we love it, works well.
    GRETCHEN -- aurora, CO   1/12/2007
Other than the system being ultrasensitive to cold weather fluctuations (which I attribute to the age of the door rollers) the system works well and was easy to install. Programming the door proved to be difficult due to the switches being reversed from the factory and the rudimentary instructions.
BEN -- el mirage, AZ   10/30/2006
Performs well. Great for disabled peolpe that cannot open and close sliding doors!
BEN -- el mirage, AZ   10/30/2006
The automatic slider is noisy, though the quality and performance is outstanding. I purchased this product because i needed a self-closing/self -latching device on the rear patio door due to code issues with having a swimming pool. I have not been able to get this product approved from the city inspector yet.
BEN -- el mirage, AZ   10/30/2006
    Great concept, excellent performance.
RALPH -- sedro wolluy, WA   10/18/2006
I thought this was a coded transmitter, but instead it appears to be operated with a magnetic tag. Radios (speaker magnets) and some metalic items when passed close to sensor will cause door to open. Not the greatest if you have security concerns. I plugged the sensor into a wall switch timer to lock out operation at night. Other than that it works well for the dog.
RALPH -- sedro wolluy, WA   10/18/2006
Took a little longer than expected to set up. Standard (heavy?) sliding door required setting changes. The programming buttons are not user friendly for making these changes. Once set the system works well.
    ROBIN -- fairfield, CT   10/11/2006
This is my second Doormate system, I broke the first mishandling it. It has worked very well since I received it (although the installation can be complicated) and is a godsend for my dog who now comes in and out at will. No more accidents and constantly getting up and down to let him in and out.
    ERIC -- richmond, VA   7/20/2006
    Works great.
    Doug -- gilroy, CA   5/9/2006
Works great as a dog door. Our dogs now expect doors to open up for them automatically! One issue is that they use it so much that the plastic gears wear out too quick.
SUSAN -- moreno valley, CA   4/3/2006
This product works well except on windy or rainy days. probably the static in the air.
    RICHARD -- richland, WA   2/16/2006
    Works just fine.
    JEFFERY G -- sherman oaks, CA   1/28/2006
Meets all my expectations, so far. Took me a whilelonger to install because I'm not all that mechanically inclined but finally got it right. It's only been installed a few weeks and the family and the dogs love it. We hope it stands up to thestest of time.
    JEFFERY G -- sherman oaks, CA   1/28/2006
Works quite well and is very handy.
    DWIGHT -- macungie, PA   1/22/2006
We have three dogs who constantly want to go outside and who do not arrive back at the same time. This product hase saved many steps while allowing the dogs free access.
