  • Easy installation takes only minutes
  • Allows any relay or contact closure input to control devices in your INSTEON network
  • Two outputs let you control both AC and DC loads with INSTEON commands

Essential Info

Smartenit's INSTEON-compatible EZIO 4 Input/2 Output Relay Controller (EZIO2x4) can be used to monitor and control low voltage devices such as contact closures, outdoor lights, appliance relays and alarm systems in your INSTEON/X10 home automation network. The Controller allows virtually any device connected to its inputs to send INSTEON signals. Connect a garage door contact closure to the device and never enter a dark house again. The Controller will activate an INSTEON lighting scene to welcome you home whenever the garage door opens. In addition to lighting control, there are a myriad of conveniences the Controller can provide in your INSTEON network. Have a doorbell ring flash all the lights in your house so you won't miss any important visitors or package deliveries or have a motion detector notify your security system of intruders. The possibilities are endless.

While basic functions can be programmed manually, advanced functionality can be programmed with the EZSrve, central automation controller. If you already have a central automation controller or a software package for your INSTEON network that doesn't have the correct parameters to program the advanced functionality of this device, you can download the free Smartenit Utility Suite which works in conjunction with an INSTEON Powerlinc Modem (2412U, 2413U or 2413S). If you need PC-free operation for simple timers, the Smartenit Utility Suite also interfaces with the INSTEON Powerlinc Controller.

What's Included

  • Smartenit EZIO 4 Input/2 Output Relay Controller
  • More Info

With four inputs, you can monitor external events, such as a garage door contact closures and temperature sensors. The 2 dry-contact relay outputs allow you to send out preprogrammed INSTEON group commands to any device in your INSTEON network or any device connected to the unit's outputs used to control low voltage 120 Volt AC (up to 0.5 Amps) or 12 Volt DC loads, such as furnace heaters, chimes and more. The device also acts as a repeater of powerline INSTEON signals.

    Smart Drapes
Want to save energy by having your blinds work for you? Use a temperature sensor with your EZIO2X4 so that you can send signals when a specific temperature is reached. Have the Controller lower your motorized drapes and turn on the air conditioner when the thermostat hits 75 degrees. Stay cool without moving a finger.

    Hearing Impaired
Use the EZIO2X4 to send different kinds of signals, like flashing lights, to make sure you know what's happening in your home. Whether you are in a location in your home that is far from the doorbell or are hearing impaired, have the IO Controller flash your lights whenever the doorbell rings so you won't miss any important visitors or package deliveries.

    INSTEON Compatible
The EZIO2X4 Controller is fully INSTEON compatible. INSTEON is a powerful home-control networking technology. INSTEON messages are transmitted throughout your home both wirelessly and through the home's existing wiring. All INSTEON messages are confirmed and repeated by INSTEON devices in the network, contributing to the outstanding reliability and performance of INSTEON products.

    X-10 compatibility
The EZIO2X4 also works with legacy X10 products. If you have an existing X10 network, the Controller works with your X10 products and provides an upgrade path to an INSTEON network.

Does what it says but difficult to set up, and the directions are not much help. For example the fact that you need resistors in various configruations with the switches is not in the "manual". If you are an electrical engineer, no problems, otherwise plan on spending a lot of time on the forums begging for help. Also, not all of the functionality works with all smarthome products - for example the isy will only pick up on and off, and not a variable signal.
STANLEY -- kiawah island, SC   4/14/2012
First unit received didn't work. Replacement sent quickly and the replacement unit works fine. Easy manual setup. Have not used with software.
    DUNCAN -- suwanee, GA   12/29/2011
    set up was easy
    AARON -- houston, TX   10/8/2011
Easy install, setup is not as easy, Requires several steps, and is best accomplished by purchasing a powerline modem and free software. Has uses, but did not fit my application.

I have been in touch with Matt and am sending back. When i get my fingers or wires near the term strip, the set LED goes crazy.
    BERT -- succasunna, NJ   5/6/2011
    Haven't installed and tried yet
RICARDO -- north miami, FL   11/16/2010
Works perfect. I love the fact that it's also fully X-10 compatible!
    JOEL -- lincoln, NE   7/2/2010
Can not program the device at all. None of the software can see it.
    DAVID S -- waterlooville, XX   1/9/2010
Need to read the instructions carefully, but configured and working with my ISY99i Pro.
    CHRIS -- larkspur, CO   10/24/2009
Instructions are a little convoluted but Setup SW works as advertised and unit performs very well. If you need multiple outputs and inputs in one unit..it's a great choice. Big plus is command set is fully documented.
    DAVID -- ketchikan, AK   10/22/2009
    Does not work with ISY-99!
    JOHN -- mobile, AL   5/1/2009
The instructions are a bit convoluted and its not easy to know which relay you are assigning even if you follow the instructions. e.g. to trigger relay one from Insteon you have to set it into program mode then press once then press and hold for 4-6secs, relay two is press twice and then press and hold 4-6, and trigger both you just press and hold. When you're doing this there is no way to know if it has taken the presses and is assigning it to your specific relay. A dip switch for program assignment or more LEDs would solve this.
    MIKE -- springfield, MO   1/17/2009
Work great with my ISY, Very nice Product.
TONY MAC -- hayward, CA   12/13/2008
The second one sent to me works fine. But the set up and manual is really bad. Not smarthomes fault but worth mentioning.
    DWIGHT -- murfreesboro, TN   11/11/2008
Good Piece.. Not the easiest to setup needs better software.
    CHAD -- denver, CO   7/19/2008
Outstanding product! Easy to setup (when you read the directions and message boards). Highly recommended!!
JOHN -- la crescenta, CA   1/17/2008
I've experimented with this but I haven't really used it yet. I'm hoping to use it to detect the on-grid/off-grid status of our solar/battery-fed inverters so that we can have it automatically turn off unneeded loads to conserve battery power when off-grid.
    JOHN -- n las vegas, NV   10/17/2007
I purchased an EZIO for the purpose of integrating my alarm system to my home’s Insteon lighting. Upon receiving the EZIO I was disappointed with the documentation available. Let me preface this statement with the fact that I sell/engineer/program/support commercial building automation systems for a living. I don’t need much information to figure out how to wire something, but connecting the EZIO with the information provided was really a “best guess” for me. The documentation leaves a lot to be desired. After convincing myself that the wiring was correct, I attempted to link the EZIO to my multitude of Switchlinc dimmers and relays. I quickly realized something wasn’t quite right. The first device I linked to an EZIO input would work. However, when I tried the same thing on another input the second input wouldn’t work, and the first stopped working too. It got to the point that once a device was linked to the EZIO, the EZIO would immediately start sending out a flood of Insteon messages (as evidenced by Houselinc Desktop software) crippling all of my Insteon devices. I called Smarthome Technical Support. The individual I spoke with had no idea what I was talking about. He put me on hold to talk to a supervisor, came back and again asked what my issue was. I made the mistake of mentioning that I also used the EZIO software (available from the manufacturer’s website) in an attempt to troubleshoot what was going wrong. Even though my issue had nothing to do with the software, he seized on the opportunity to blow me off and directed me to contact the manufacturer’s support. He provided the phone number and ended the call. I immediately called the phone number provided. The person who answered the phone had absolutely no clue what I was talking about because it was not the right number. That is because I was given the phone number of a contractor in Boston who installs Insteon products instead of the manufacturer! I located a phone number for the Simplehomenet (the EZIO manufacturer) and gave them a call. I need to point out here that their support was stellar. After explaining my situation and the troubleshooting steps that I had performed, they determined that my device did not have the most current firmware version. Even though I did not purchase it from them directly, they asked that I mail it in and they would send out a replacement with the current firmware. The replacement arrived in a few days. Once I received the replacement I was able to quickly hook it up and link it to my lighting. In summary: - Do not purchase the EZIO unless you are confident of your electrical skills. A familiarity with the Insteon command set doesn’t hurt either. - If you need support on this product, don’t bother calling Smarthome. - Once you get it connected and programmed it does work very well.

Actually the software is very bad, plus the instructions are easy to follow if you work for the company that made the device, is not clear, and not any one can do it. Being struggleling with it for like two days.
    Ddclausen -- pleasanton, ca   12/16/2012
I could never get this product to work. Over the course of 2 months on the Simplehomenet forum, I could net get the product to function properly. I worked with their product support team and they finally gave up. They had no clue as to why it didn't work. I am dissapointed as I spent $150 for the device and it is outside the exchange window. Do not buy products that are supported by Simplehomenet.
