Essential Info

Make sure your lawn and garden plants are watered with a programmable timed sprinkler system that can be set up on your PC and controlled with any INSTEON or X10 controller. The INSTEON/X10 8-Zone Sprinkler Controller is an 8-zone irrigation unit capable of controlling up to eight sprinkler valves either individually or in program sequences in response to single INSTEON or X10 command from your PC or a standalone home automation controller. This irrigation controller will work with any standard 24V AC sprinkler system (sold separately), and a free software download is available for easy programming. The Controller requires a 24V AC transformer (sold separately) to power the sprinkler solenoid valves.

While basic functions can be programmed manually, advanced functionality can be programmed with the EZSrve, central automation controller. If you already have a central automation controller or a software package for your INSTEON network that doesn't have the correct parameters to program the advanced functionality of this device, you can download the free Smartenit Utility Suite which works in conjunction with an INSTEON Powerlinc Modem (2412U, 2413U or 2413S). If you need PC-free operation for simple timers, the SHN Utility Suite also interfaces with the INSTEON Powerlinc Controller.

Note: The EZSrve, central automation controller or a PowerLinc Controller - INSTEON USB Interface is needed for the timer programming.

    Download the free Smartenit Utility Suite below to set up zone programming and timers. This Windows XP utility is compatible with INSTEON and X10 for flexible remote programming and control. You'll appreciate the program's flexibility in setting up cost-saving, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsible irrigation systems. Best of all, the built-in powerline interface stores your timed programs, so you won't need to leave the PC on in order for the system to turn your sprinklers on and off at scheduled times.

    Flexible Programming Options
    Program the INSTEON/X10 8-Zone Sprinkler Controller to turn your sprinklers on and off at specific times at designated intervals. This will keep your lawn green without overwatering your plants. Set up to four independent irrigation programs for different zones of your yard. One valve is programmable for pump (always on) control, and separate timers are stored to prevent a valve from being left on indefinitely.

    Built-in technology makes the INSTEON/X10 8-Zone Sprinkler Controller usable immediately with INSTEON commands. Additionally, X10 compatibility and easy X10 coding allow the unit to be usable right away with any X10-supported package. The INSTEON/X10 8-Zone Sprinkler Controller will also act as a repeater of powerline INSTEON signals, and it even contains a pass-through outlet on its face for other AC devices, so you won't lose an outlet when you plug this irrigation controller in.

    Hard to rate when the Insteon Hub does not work with this device yet. This is very frustrating since I got the hub in part for the sprinkler control. I do not know whose fault this is. But I am hoping this will be fixed soon.

    The sprinkler controller is working great! I am using it with HouseLinc. It was difficult to figure out how to make them work together. All the Insteon instructions are just on how to link it to a keypad or button. With some serious digging in the Insteon user forum, I was able to figure out how to get it linked, and how to send custom commands to it using the "Custom" icon in the event dialog. I would have given it a 5-star rating if this had actually been documented somewhere.

    The unit i received is not the unit in the picture. My unit did not come with the passthrough utility outlet. I was very upset about that.

    I had a Toro Digital controller before, pre-existing Insteon ISY99i, and many lights/switched/etc prior to ordering the EZFlora. Installation was a snap, reused the power supply wired to the old controller. Programming was easy, started with examples from wiki and made a few tweaks for my yard. Runs 7 zones, and with the Weatherbug/ETo modules, saves me a ton on water. Highly recommend this unit.

    I did not try the INSTEON communication scheme of this unit and therefore cannot comment on it. On the X10 side, however, the unit did not perform as expected. While an appliance module that was plugged into the back side of the unit for test purposes was switching very reliably (indicating that there was a "good enough" X10 signal hitting the unit), the sprinkler controller itself did not switch on and off sprinkler valves reliably. Sometimes the wrong valve was selected, more often nothing happened at all, and sometimes everything was working fine. The behavior was the same on two units that I purchased. X10 signals, by their very nature, are varying somewhat in their strength, and some amount of noise must be expected on the power line. I expect that X10 units cope with that and perform as well as (or better than) the standard X10 Powerhouse or X10 Pro modules. In spite of their high price, the EZFlora units did not do that, so I had to return them. Thanks to the superb Smarthome customer service and return policies, however, I am no worse off than I was before I purchased the units, and all I lost was a weekend spent on trouble shooting.

    A very effective "smart" replacement for the old rain bird I had been using, particularly with a computer based control program such as Indigo which allows graphical representations of the yard and which zones are running. There are two reasons that it did not get 5 stars, however; The synchronization methodology is a bit tricky, and the first time I set it up, it inadverdantly (and silently) picked up an X10 address in the line noize, and 3 weeks later triggered a zone (with no indication on the computer). I had to play with sending house codes to confirm this, then factory reset and resynchronize to eliminate it. The other thing is common to most sprinkler systems; while they do allow a "Master Valve/irrigation pump" scenario, they do not allow me the option to run more than one zone at a time in order to keep the irrigation pump loaded enough to prevent it from cycling on pressure.

    Seemed to link up just fine with my ISY99 controller. I did have to download the SimpleHomeNet utility, and connect a serial cable to my PowerLinc modem so that I could update the configuration to convert zone 8 to a pump. (So, now zone 8 comes on when ANY zone comes on, to drive my pump) This was for well water, I might add.

    My TORO controller stopped working. I could spend some $50+ to replace it with a similar one from the local hardware store, OR spend twice that for this from Smarthome. And I am glad I ordered this. I had an outlet in my pump house near all the control wires, so connections were easy. I was also pleased that there were no communication issues with my ISY controller, since the pump house is separated from the house. Programming the sprinkler routines that replicated the TORO in the ISY was also a breeze. The 24V power transformer from my TORO also worked just fine with this device.

    Due to a lack of programs to remotely control the EZFlora Irrigation controller from the 2412N INSTEON contoller I have not had a chance to use this yet.

    Very easy to install. I use Indigo software to setup and control all my Insteon products. The EzFlora works extremely well with Indigo which I have paired up with Indigo Touch allowing me to control and test each zone on my iPhone while in my yard. Saving me from having to run back and forth to to controller. Wish I bought this when it first came out.

    First was DOA, but was replaced. Set up instructions could use a a little work. Working great so far. 1 zone at a time is what I am used to.
