Overview

  • Allows 5-wire thermostats to use only 4 wires
  • Also allows 5 wires to work like 6 wires
  • Easy to install
  • Easier than running new wire

Essential Info

In applications where additional wiring cannot be run to your programmable digital thermostat, the Add-A-Wire accessory can be used to add a wire to the thermostat. The accessory can also be used to fix a broken wire, to make one thermostat work like two, to add cooling to a heat-only system, or to add a common wire to a 4-wire system.

Please Note: the green and yellow wires of the Diode "Y" may not be connected to the R or C terminal of the thermostat. (The function of a diode is to allow current in one direction and to block current in the opposite direction.)

This accessory works with the 1-Day Programmable Digital Thermostat, the 7-Day Programmable Digital Thermostat, and the 7-Day Programmable Thermostat, Dual Fuel (each sold separately).

Fantastic product - so much easier than pulling a new wire. Works as advertized. Good applications: Adding common wire, upgrading to a 2-stage t-stat, fixing broken conductor. Warning: A good background of hvac control circuits is required to install this product correctly. If you know what each thermostat wire does, call an hvac technician.

    Worked perfectly for my need

    Excellent. Arrived on time.
GREG -- yuba city, CA   1/3/2011
Shipped 1 of 2 ordered, but they made it right after a phone call & Email
    ROBERT -- sparta, NJ   12/18/2010
returned it. I had assumed it was installed at the thermostat, not the furnace. I decided that working inside the furnace controls when it wasn't clear which wires did what would be dangerous and beyond my DIY capabilities.

I love this product! I install up to 30 thermostats a week and need a 5th wire to power them. The add-a-wire eliminates the need to run new thermostat wire in most cases. We use at least one per day; sometimes 2 or three per day. The schematics provided by the manufacturer are the best of all these types of products and I have never had a failure of the unit. Thanks for keeping them in stock.
    NATHAN -- fresno, CA   6/24/2010
This device worked exactly as advertised. With this unit, you can effectively combine the fan relay line and compressor relay line onto one wire which is then split back into two wires at the thermostat with the included diode y-splitter. You could also buy a second Add-A-Wire and combine 2 other relay wires onto 1 wire (though I did not need to do this). Like most other reviewers, I found the very basic instructions to be barely sufficient, which is the only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5. The instructions seem to be written for HVAC installers rather than the average homeowner.
    JEREMY -- lexington, MA   5/13/2010
Warning - this product does not work to add a third wire to a two wire system. This wasn't clear from the documentation.
    MARCEL -- houston, TX   12/11/2009
It turns out I didn't need this device, because I had 6-wire HVAC cable in my walls even though my old thermostat only needed 4 wires. I gave 3 stars because I never got a chance to hook up the device to see if it works. My HVAC guy was blown away by this thing. He had never heard of it, and was intrigued about not having to fish wires. He was skeptical that it would actually work. This product could really benefit from a "brochure" explain HOW it works, otherwise it seems like magic.
    CHARLES -- chicago, IL   8/23/2009
A little pricy, but works well. Note that you can use more than one to increase the number of wires more.
    PAUL -- philadelphia, PA   1/27/2009
Device works exactly as described. Directions are not clear.
RUTH ANN -- greeley, CO   12/22/2008
I love that I was able to find his product and it really has given me so much more independence. It works great and would recommend to anyone
    KEN -- chelsea, MI   8/23/2008
Works as advertised but the instructions are not real clear. It would have helped to have an explaination on how it works (actually it's quite simple)to make things a whole lot clearer.
    JAMES -- bristow, VA   6/6/2008
Turns out I didn't need the unit. When I got into the installation I found 4 additional wires in the wall. Everything working great.
    ij_20 -- Ontario   9/1/2011
Good product. Warning: If you're not familiar with hvac control wiring, don't buy this - call a technician.
olsonbri -- san diego, California   7/15/2011
Very poor documentation. I wanted to add a common wire to a 4 wire setup. No examples of this, and the examples that are there are confusing i.e., they show an example of a 4 wire setup to add a 5th wire, but in the illustration there are 5 wires coming from the HVAC. Will return.
fl homeowner -- ft. myers, FL   1/11/2011
I am needing to add a common wire, as our builder did not hook it up at either end, battery thermostat was used can hook to thermostat, but cannot find other end at air handler to try. Would this product work for us? We need help!!! I don't wan to return our new thermostat!!!
    sheba -- scottsdale, AZ   7/22/2010
Add-A Wire This review may have answered my Q: Warning - this product does not work to add a third wire to a two wire system- JEREMY - LEXINGTON, MA I have an older building. Only 2 wires coming out of wall into thermo. One wire, the common, we never touch. 2X/year I have to move LIVE wire from COLD to HEAT so thermo works accordingly. Was hoping this would be the answer to my maintenance nightmare.
    C B -- Chicago IL   8/6/2009
Works as described. One thing that isn't described is using more than one. I used three. I had a 4 wire cable to the thermostat and needed dual stage heat, A/C, dehumidify and fan R, Y, G, W1, W2, humidify, and dehumidify. Used one for W1 and W2, a second for G and Y, and a third for DEH and humidify. A little pricy, but easier than rewiring.
