Overview

  • Set different temperatures in different areas for comfort and energy savings
  • Thermal equalizer prevents overheating of top floor of 2-story homes
  • Works with standard thermostats, any heating system, and with X10 or RS232/485 thermostats for automation control

Essential Info

The ZC2S two zone HVAC Control Unit allows 2 standard electronic thermostats to connect to a single heating and cooling HVAC mechanical system. It provides two independent "zones" of temperature control by controlling the mechanical system and motorized dampers in each zone. The ZC2S is for use with any residential style standard gas or electric heating HVAC system up to 5 ton capacity. The control unit supports one stage heating and one stage cooling systems. The two zones are truly independent and can be in either heating or cooling modes. The control unit features
auto changeover from heating to cooling modes and gives heating calls priority. The ZC2S operation is fully automatic and transparent to the user. Each zone thermostat provides the complete and independent control for that zone. You can think of each zone as having a separate heating/cooling system with its own thermostat.

The ZC2S works with most ELECTRONIC thermostats (Honeywell, White Rogers, Lux). Use only thermostats that are either battery operated or that use both sides of the 24VAC power (they have R and C terminals) from the HVAC system

Easy, accurate, and prompt. Everything you want when ordering online. I'll use you again.
JAY -- fort worth, TX   5/8/2014
Works fine. At first I had the two 24 Vac lines reversed to one of the thermostats. The stat looked to be working, but system wouldn't respond to it. Correcting that minor wiring problem made everything OK.
Jay -- fort worth, TX   5/2/2014
Replaced a 25-year-old zone controller with this unit. Works great; drives my new honeywell motorized dampers, & interfaces with my ancient honeywell electronic thermostats.
    DONALD -- folsom, CA   4/18/2014
Actually, I didn't need it. Found a loose connection on original unit. However, the return process was flawless, and the customer service excellent. Received a refund promptly, no hassle. Smarthome gets an A+++ Thanks!
    SUBBARAO V -- american canyon, CA   2/22/2014
The unit arrived in two days. Provided clearer instructions for installation. Works great!
Travis King -- huntington, WV   8/2/2013
Thanks to Zeeway for his review and note on the extra +24 wire between controller and furnace. Thing works like a champ. Just put it ahead of your old tstat and let the factory controller worry about the firebox cut off. A zone controller isn't meant to be a direct replacement for your furnace controller. Only been a few days and already seeing the difference in my home. A+
    JUSTIN -- altadena, CA   3/25/2013
This unit does not have a thermistor controlled shutoff to prevent firebox overheating. Zones systems by nature cut the CFM and can cause the FAU to shut down requiring a service call reset. The Honeywell HZ311 TruZone controller is comparably priced ($142), handles 3 zones, ganged servo dampers on each with 1-45VA transformer, and has connections for normally open and normally closed. It is and extremely well designed professional unit and worked much better for our application. I highly recommend it over this product.
    PHILIP D -- san jose, CA   8/30/2012
    Works great.
WILBUR -- san ramon, CA   8/15/2012
The product was received in good order and time. The item was installed and is working. I wll be able to evaluate the the controller better when the heating season begins, to see how affective it is in eliminating zone stratification. W.B.

This boards works! It was an easy install after a call to tech service at RCS 1-888-727-4822. The instructions on page 5 are misleading...you must have a connection to the 24v common shown on the wiring diagram on the hvac system block of inputs. I found the terminal on my hvac system labeled C where all the other thermostat wires hookup, and connected the blue wire in the bundle to this terminal and then to the RCS board, hvac block 24v C. Tech support guy also told me if you want to use a separate 24v transformer, you would hook it up to the RCS board HVAC connections for 24v common and R 24v...and you would still hookup the red wire from your hvac system to the R 24v connection also.
    Jerry -- Wilton NH   10/6/2011
Nowhere on the description is the fact that this will only control a single stage of heat/cool. This severely limits the application of this and this information is buried in the users manual rather than prominent in the Essential Info section. Had I know this I would not have bought this device as I require a 2 stage controller. Other than this limitation, it looks like it would install easily and should work fine.
    TARYN -- troutdale, OR   9/9/2011
Very simple to install works as per description. Actually easier to install and understand dipswitch settings. Works great with my Trane forced air gas furnace and Trane Central Air. Upstairs and Downstairs balanced within a degree and indoor humidity levels are great and balanced. Furnace will power the controller and controller will power two dampers without a power supply.
EVERETT -- newport news, VA   2/14/2010
Locating the 24V power source from the HVAC was a bit of a mystery for me, a DIY type. But I figured it out and the controller works as advertised. Wired in two-programmable thermostats (upstairs & downstairs) with very good comfort throughout the cold days. Looking forward to warmer weather to see how the AC "side" works out.
    G R -- shaftsburg, MI   11/2/2009
Excellent product. Easy to install, work 1st time without any problems.
    MICHAEL -- lilburn, GA   2/14/2009
Works like a dream. Easy install. Great value considering you save 3-$4k on installing another hvac system
    JAMES -- pittsfield, MA   1/6/2008
Very good diagrams and discriptions of how to install, very simple
    JASON -- framingham, MA   8/6/2007
Value for money, like I have not seen in a long time. Took me about 30 mins to install (wiring to upstairs took longer of course). Followed the instructions, and now upstairs calls when it needs it and downstairs too. In teh heat of summer, instead of cooling the whole house while we sleep, we just cool upstairs. The A/C runs about 40% less than it used to. This will pay for itself in a couple of months.
RUSSELL -- newport coast, CA   1/20/2007
works great, just like it is supposed to. Controls 2 zones using 2 thermostats and one system. Simple to install.
    DONALD -- atlanta, GA   8/16/2006
just what the doctor ordered - easy to understand directions, works like a charm
    NORMAN -- roswell, GA   2/23/2006
Item was as described and well engineered
