Is trying to get your family members to agree on a comfortable temperature sound about as easy as running the Boston Marathon in two hours or less? Then put an end to the family feuds with a powerful Six-Zone Controller that helps your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system maintain different temperatures in different parts of the house! Now you can easily heat the ground floor of your two-story homes without broiling the kids upstairs. Or, if you're empty-nest parents, you won't have to pay to heat or cool bedrooms that are unoccupied for most of the year. Set it up in your home and you'll never have to hear grandma and grandpa complain that their room is too cold again!
Designed to simplify the energy management of your home, these integrated zone controllers acts as a central hub between six thermostats, dampers or water valves, allowing you to do things that wouldn't be possible with standard systems. For example, you can have one thermostat ask for cooling while another requests heat. Or program the system to open a damper to allow outdoor air to enter the system. You can even add an outdoor temperature sensor, or a sensor for the pool or spa, that allows you to see remote temperature information on a thermostat indoors!
The controller mounts near your HVAC equipment or in a utility closet and appears to be a regular thermostat to your existing heating or air conditioning equipment. The system will run properly with as few as two zones, while still giving you the ability to add zones as your needs change. For each zone, you'll need a wall thermostat and normally open
duct damper(s), sold separately.
Although this is a totally standalone system that can be operated independently of any other home automation systems, it also offers the ability to be controlled via RS-485, a hardwired communications protocol that sends signals over twisted-pair wires, like Cat. 5 cable. This communications platform is extremely reliable, so you won't have to worry about lost signals, nor will it clog up your home's AC lines with additional signals - perfect if you have an X10 system in your home. Your controller can request the current temperature of each zone, read and set each zone's set point, read and set the zone's modes, and issue more than 20 other commands! The system can also be purchased to use RS-232 communications. You can also choose not to use the RS-485/232 feature; the zone controller will operate normally from the signals from each wall display unit.
The programming to control this system is built into Stargate (#1240), HomeVision (#1350), and HAL2000 (#1450) home automation systems, each sold separately. If you want to write your own programming to control the system, download the programming specs from this web page.
The HVAC Zone Controllers are compatible with standard systems that have one heating stage and up to two cooling stages. Heatpump systems with up to 3 heat and 2 cooling stages is also supported. To get started, you'll need one 3002ZC Zone Controller, a 24-volt AC power supply (#3061), a wall display thermostat (#3002WD) for each zone, and a normally open damper for each zone (accessories sold separately). Quality built in the USA.
