Essential Info

What is ICON?
ICON by SmartLabs Design is our value-oriented line of lighting and appliance control products utilizing INSTEON technology. ICON products have several of the same features as our regular products without the added cost. ICON is another great addition to the Smarthome family of products.

ICON Appliance Module — Our Most Economical Remote-Controllable Plug-In On/Off Switch
Fill your entire home with personalized mood lighting for any occasion. The ICON Appliance Module is a full-featured plug-in on/off switch that can be remotely controlled by a ControLinc tabletop controller, KeypadLinc, or any other INSTEON controller. This simple-to-use plug-in on/off switch has cool features like local control, so you can still use the appliance's built-in switch to turn device on and off. The ICON Appliance Module is made to plug into a 3-pin outlet. This on/off switch controls all standard appliances like fans, fluorescent lights, and many other non-dimmable devices up to 10 amps and incandescent lights up to 400 watts. If you need to control a dimmable lamp, try the ICON Lamp Dimmer or the grounded LampLinc 3-Pin, which allow on/off and brightness control.

Never come home to a dark house again: Install HouseLinc 2 on your PC to schedule any ICON Appliance Module or any other INSTEON-compatible device to turn on or off at any specific time or even at sunrise and sunset.

Note: If you are using LED lights that are very low wattage, you may notice that the LED's do not turn out completely when plugged into this device. In this case, you’ll need to add to the load with more LED's or higher wattage bulbs - generally higher than a 5 watt load.

    Create Multi-Way Circuits
The ICON Appliance Module allows you to customize your lighting setup no matter how your house is wired. It's simple to create a 3-, 4-, or 5-way controlled appliance. Plug the device you want to include in the circuit into the ICON Appliance On/Off Module, then plug the module into an open outlet. Link the ICON Appliance Module to all the INSTEON-compatible wall switches and Tabletop Controllers that you want to control the ICON on/off module for a flexible, fully functional multi-way controlled appliance.

    Scene Lighting
Scenes allow you to control multiple lights, rooms or even the whole home with a single command. Because the ICON Appliance Module can be a member of up to 30 scenes (i.e. "Movie Time," "Party," "Romance," etc.), you'll be able to launch various lighting scenarios with a single button press on an INSTEON controller. All member lights and appliances can turn on or off instantly, all controlled with one command from one button. If you want to control multiple scenes from a wall-mount controller, try the KeypadLinc Dimmer.

    Status LED
Get a visual indication when ICON Appliance Module is sending or receiving INSTEON or X10 signals. The Status LED is also used for setup programming.

The ICON Appliance Module is fully INSTEON compatible and X10 ready. Homeowners with existing X10 networks can easily migrate to an INSTEON network without having to discard all their existing X10 devices. X10 ready means that it can respond to X10 commands from an X10 controller. Please note that INSTEON devices repeat INSTEON signals but not X10. The ICON Appliance Module is not X10 scene compatible.

    Non-Volatile Memory
    All ICON Appliance Module settings are stored in non-volatile memory and are not lost during power failures. Please note however that the device being controlled WILL NOT come back on automatically. To turn the device back on you must do one of the following;
    A) Press the Set button on the Appliance Module
    B) Send and On command from a controller
    C) Un-plug the device, then plug it back into the Appliance Module while the Appliance Module is still plugged into the wall outlet
    D) Turn the device’s switch off, then on

    Certifications and Warranty
All ICON Appliance Module products are safety approved. The factory for SmartLabs Design Products is ISO9001 certified. In order to meet the ISO 9001 standards, the entire factory underwent rigorous inspections of procedures and policies before being certified. The certification received was based on its dedication to high-quality management systems and strict adherence of quality control systems and guidelines. Because of this, Smarthome stands behind the entire ICON line of products with a full 1-year warranty.

It's a cheap alternaive to X10 devices. It has few issues however: 1 Power supply - old design based on a zener diode overheats and soon fails 2 The relay inside is actually 120V relay surprise - yeah so it buzzes from time to time Got 5 and one is already dead in less than one year... It's worth to pay more for 2456S3...

Did not work reliably - returned it. The unit would work 5 or 6 times then stop, then work again then stop. Was able to use other Insteon switch in the same location/setup with no issues but was told by customer support essentially that ICON is a cheap generic version that does not have the same signal strength characteristics/cannot handle weaker signals as more expensive units so is prone to interference/not working as a result. Even though I have a simple set up and only a few devices, support also told me that I need dual band repeaters - something not clear in the literature. You need one repeater for every 750-1000 sq feet of house!! I only have one panel in the kitchen to control a few outside lights/fountain and under cabinet lights inside. 3 or 4 circuits total. If Insteon cannot handle this application without needing additional 4 repeaters based on my 3200 sq ft of house which they should be dual band then I am wondering if I bother using this stuff in any other rooms. Apparently they say they make it clear all over the website that ICON is a generic cheap option and that even with INSTEON OEM you need repeaters and dual band to make the network in any way reliable - but have to say on the 3 times I have discussed options with their chat support and read up on products I was never made aware of these limitations and in describing exactly what I need to do what I want they have never included dual band as a pre-req. Truly Smarthome if you need to have extra stuff to run even a simple application why don't you say so on every device description.... perhaps because you can sell more that way?! In the past tech support have been good, but this time got a smug little man who wasted an hour and half. In addition, help line is always busy. Hung up after 38 minutes on hold, called back and gave up after 21 minutes on hold - so tried chat only to be condescended to by a smug arrogant unhelpful idiot.

The modules were easily recognized by the Controller.I'll need to get a phase/rf module next.
    KLAUS -- wauchula, FL   3/23/2012
Easy to set up. Love the iPhone app to control my lights.
    FRANKLIN D -- alpharetta, GA   2/6/2012
Have 5 and they all are working perfectly after 5 months of use.
GEORGE -- los angeles, CA   1/12/2012
reliable, easy setup and great functionality
    WILLIAM -- salem, VA   1/12/2012
Works well. Negatives: 1) no unswitched outlet, 2) can't turn off low current loads like LED Christmas lights (leakage keeps them on so have to add a dummy load).
    NED -- towanda, KS   1/2/2012
Wonderful, Simply works. Easy obvious setup.
    LINDA -- indianapolis, IN   10/13/2011
Very simple to plug in and start using.
    TODD -- joliet, IL   6/2/2011
I am using this as a status indicator for garagelinc with use with smartlinc. Works well!
    ROBERT -- edwardsburg, MI   3/17/2011
    Works as advertised.
TIM -- saint louis, MO   3/17/2011
works as it should, but LED is very bright and blinks when it sees a command on the line. It's pretty annoying but can be covered up easily
PIERRE -- carleton place, ON   2/17/2011
Installed quickly and easily. Switching from X10 to Insteon and it is great that all the insteon devices can handle both technologies at the same time. Make the transition seamless and allows for older technology to work with thenew.
    KEVIN -- chicago, IL   2/1/2011
Easy installation and easy to connect to the ISY-99i.
    ROBERT -- snohomish, WA   1/3/2011
I bought this to control the Christmas tree. Works great with no problems.
    LARRY -- raleigh, NC   12/28/2010
Easy to set up and quiet timer (no relay click).
    ROBERT -- glenwood, MD   12/26/2010
This device worked properly with Indigo software only after I placed the spare (glad I ordered an extra!) in a location between this device and the computer to act as an INSTEON relay.
    HAMILTON -- austin, TX   12/11/2010
Now that I've found all the electrical noise sources and signal sinks and applied filters to them, the module seems to be working most of the time.
DANIEL -- san jose, CA   8/16/2010
Does everything it needs to, with no extra fluff.
    ROSE -- sunnyvale, CA   8/5/2010
    Worked perfectly with minimal setup.
