Essential Info

Turn on your INSTEON-controlled lights or appliances when you enter the room and turn them off after you've left. Truly automating your lighting, this motion sensor is perfect for areas of your home such as the laundry room, closets and the garage where lights commonly get left on. Use this motion sensor for indoor or outdoor applications, and link it to a wall switch, plug-in lamps or appliances. You can even have the motion sensor trigger your thermostat to a favorite comfort level when you enter your home or any room in your house.

Additional features include an adjustable 'Off' countdown timer delay, night-only mode with adjustable light sensitivity settings, adjustable motion sensitivity, wireless range of up to 150', 40-foot field of vision and a pivoting mounting bracket. INSTEON Wireless Motion sensor is a must-have for any INSTEON home automation network as an addition that will make your life more convenient, fun and energy-efficient. A 9 Volt battery is required and included.

Please note that 2842-222 is the new product number of 2420M. The product and functionality are the same.

Required Accessory
Since the motion sensor only transmits RF signals, your home must have at least one Access Point or other dual-band product to interpret the command for controlling powerline only devices.

Walk into a room and have the lights turn on automatically
How It Works
When the sensor detects motion it sends a wireless RF signal to the nearest Access Point or other dual-band product (sold separately) which in turn relays the signal over your existing power wires to turn on linked devices such as lamps or wall switches. After a selectable time of no motion, the sensor turns those same lights (or appliances) off.

The motion sensor also features a secondary dusk / dawn control feature that is accessible with computer controllers such as HouseLinc or ISY-99. It allows you to set a device or group of devices to activate when the photocell detects a change in light or dark conditions for more than 3.5 minutes. Great for automatically controlling landscape lighting and more.

Optional Power Supply
A Plug-In 9-Volt Power Supply (Battery Eliminator) can be used in place of a 9 Volt battery, eliminating the cost and trouble of regularly replacing the battery. To install, just notch a small hole using a file or shear on the Motion Sensor battery door (for the power supply wire) and plug it in.

Note About PIR Sensors
As with all PIR (Passive Infrared) motion sensors, there are certain factors which can cause detection range / reliability to vary. Because PIR sensors rely on changes in heat to detect motion, be aware of the following factors that can effect PIR reliability when choosing a location to mount your INSTEON Motion Sensor:
  • Rapid environmental changes

  • Direct sunlight

  • Direct wind from a heater or A/C

  • Fireplaces
Also, please note that certain types of treated glass may or may not act as an infrared 'wall' through which a motion sensor can detect. If you want to detect motion through glass, we recommend you test it in your particular application. Note: Any accumulation of ice, snow or dirt on the Fresnel lens may also interfere with the motion sensor’s ability to detect motion.

Never Leave Another Light On Again
INSTEON Wireless Motion Sensor is a great energy-saver: Your lights will turn on when you enter and automatically turn off after you leave, so you’ll never have to worry about leaving your lights on. Also, INSTEON Wireless Motion Sensor has a built-in photocell, so it can be disabled during the day. If daylight is enough to light your house during the day, Motion Sensor can leave the lights off, even when motion is detected. Using Motion Sensor to limit the amount of time lights are on, is a great first step towards saving energy and protecting the environment.

Unlock More Motion Sensor Options with HouseLinc
Get HouseLinc and you'll be able to make adjustments to the INSTEON Wireless Motion Sensor without having to touch it again. These adjustments include:
    • Delay
Change the Off duration to anywhere between 30 seconds up to 2 hours.
    • Indicator Intensity
Controls the LED indicator brightness. This is good when you have the motion sensor in a bedroom and don't want the distraction of the red LED when it's being activated.
    • Ambient Light
Adjust the sensitivity of the motion sensors photocell (light sensor). This allows you to set the amount of light the motion sensor is required to see before transmitting a command.

    Dusk / Dawn Photocell Sensor
Save energy by ensuring lights are off at dawn or turn your porch lights on at dusk with INSTEON Motion Sensor's dusk / dawn feature. When used with supported INSTEON software or an INSTEON automation controller, Motion Sensor can also be used as a dusk/dawn sensor. After it has been bright for 3 and a half minutes, Motion Sensor will send an Off command for its 'Group 2', which can be used to turn off lights and appliances or trigger a software event. Conversely, it will send an On command after it has been dark for 3 and a half minutes.

    Low Battery Warning
Get notified when it's time to change the battery. INSTEON Motion Sensor has 2 methods of indicating the battery life is low:
    • LED double-flashes after motion is detected (even if LED is disabled)
    • On command is sent to 'Group 3', which can be utilized with INSTEON software or an INSTEON automation controller

For extended battery life, consider purchasing a 9V Lithium battery which can extend battery life by 4 times.

If you have a need for the motion sensor to activate many links, using HouseLinc, ISY-99 or other INSTEON computer controller that supports this product can extend battery life.

Motion Sensor has been manufactured with a surface that can be painted to blend in with your home décor. This gives you the ability to decide exactly what color will give your motion sensor installation that professional finished look. Please note, it is recommended that you protect the Fresnel lens during the painting process. Any excess paint or residue may cause motion sensor to operate improperly.

    CASEY -- kent, WA   4/2/2014
This is by and large the most useful of the Insteon product line. Half of the automation out there could not be done without using this coupled with a controller to function as a energy saving device, a low light detection device and a timer. The product functions as it should however it should be noted that these motion sensors are not necessarily pet friendly. While there's a way to modify the sensor beam (abc) great care needs to be performed to aim the sensors where a pet will not trip them unless you like the lights coming on anytime they walk by throughout the day/night even if you're not there. It would be nice if the batteries lasted longer as they're difficult to change. There should be a mini motion sensor version created to reflect the change in technology as these haven't changed size in several years, almost as far back as the x-10 erra. What would be nice is if the motion sensors could act as a range finder to identify an object's location relative to the sensor to allow for more fine tuned control.

Used this for our master bathrooms water closet. No more leaving those lights on all the time. This is perfect.
JAMES -- mount joy, PA   3/9/2014
it work, customer support is bad
    Vlad -- NW Ohio   2/21/2014
Have used multiple units for years with excellent results. I do have one finding not reflected in the other reviews. Battery life. When the detector stops working, replacing the battery almost always restores function. However testing the used batteries indicates they are still good/useable actually about 8.7 volts on meter. 9V batteries are too expensive to discard with useable life. Solution: Solid state components are designed to operate over a range of power requirements. 9 volts is commonly used because the battery package is more compact and convenient. 12 volts while more bulky is more efficient and provides greater battery life in marginal 9 volt applications. Parts: Butler PM-60 pill bottle $.75 from my veterinarian for outside operation, Radio Shack Battery Holder 270-407 $2.99, Radio Shack 9V snap connector 270-235 2ea $2.99/5pk, 8 AA Alkaline Batteries. wire insulation I use two section clipped from a 12 Way 10A Electrical Screw Terminal Connector 2 pin. Assembly: Pierce bottle cap with awl. Thread connector wire through hole with connector outside bottle. Attach and insulate connectors observing wire polarity red to black. Remove 9V battery and route outside connector into battery compartment and join connectors minor trimming of one cover retainer may be necessary to improve cover closure and reduce wire insulation compression. Insert 8 AA batteries into holder. Connect inside 9V connector to holder. Insert holder into bottle connector first. Place cap on bottle. Test detector operation. Secure bottle to/near motion detector method optional. For outside operation, mount with bottle cap and battery compartment down.
    WILLIAM -- lakeville, MN   1/11/2014
    Works as expected.
HENRY -- montgomery center, VT   1/9/2014
    very easy to install
    MATT -- allentown, PA   1/3/2014
these require a bit of "fooling around" to get setup, but once done they do work okay. Im using it with an ISY994i and its just easiest to link it to nothing and intercept activations through a program. THe only downside is should the controller not catch the trigger nothing is going to happen. As I have several used for "pet monitoring" its not critical if a trigger is missed, besides Im only having the unit trigger a program to send me a text - nothing more. Overall its not bad for what it is though.
JEFFREY -- north andover, MA   12/31/2013
I wish they sold these bulk. I could use several more around my increasingly smarter home.
    THOMAS -- carlisle, MA   12/30/2013
    seems to work just fine
    DIANE -- leonardtown, MD   12/22/2013
We used it high above our garage area, works fine.
    Disappointed -- atlanta, GA   12/20/2013
Bought 3 at the same time. Worked fine for about 6 months. then the batteries all died within 1 week of each other. Replaced with nwe Lithium batteries, but found that one of the detectors no longer works. I can manually trigger with the button, but the sensor light no longer bliks, and it no longer detects motion, even after re-lgging it into the network. if I place one of the other sensors right next to it, the other detects motion without problem, so it is not an environmental issue. No matter what the jumper configuration, it will no longer detect motion and the sensor no longer blinks, even if I let it sit for hours. It is basically dead. Had to take it offline, and go back to the old X10 motion sensor, which has worked flawlessly for 10 years, for that zone. Using the EZX10RF with a BoosterLinc appears to make those old sensors work with the INSTEON network fairly well, and those older sensors are far more responsive.
    JOHN -- falmouth, ME   11/19/2013
These little guys work great but can be a little tricky to program with ISY-994i
    PETER -- natick, MA   11/18/2013
I installed 4 of these motion sensors and so far, all four work well. For those exposed to the weather, I add a skim coat of silicon sealant to the joints because the sensor does not have water proofing, which worries me. They are easy enough to initialize into my ISY 994i but I have yet to figure out how to best configure the various options. Changing options is awkward because one has to remove a cover and push a button inside the sensor. It would be much better is the sensor could be reprogrammed without removing it and its cover. Each sensor includes both a low battery indicator and a dusk indicator. I like the low battery indicator because I can write a program that scans all my motion sensors and sends me an email if one needs a new battery.
    BILL -- camarillo, CA   11/18/2013
Easy installation and setup. Used outside. Responds well to motion.
    LOUIS -- alexandria, VA   10/25/2013
Had to do a factory reset to be recognized by ISY but work great now.
Bob -- pacific palisades, CA   10/16/2013
Worked fine for a couple of years, then totally died. This seems to happen with many of Smarthome's Insteon products, like the Keypad Link in particular. I've gone through quite a few of those. I'll probably buy another Insteon Motion Sensor though, as nothing else does that!
    RANDY -- eagle, ID   10/12/2013
Received quickly and product worked as expected.
    IndianaGuy -- Indiana USA   10/9/2013
I love this PIR! I use it with the free Houselinc program. I actually have 5 of them doing different things. One was outdoors accidentaly dropped 10 feet onto concreat and the next day I saw it had bounced out into the yard. Figured it was 'busted' but NOT so! Re mounted it using heavy duty Velcro this time and it works AND PROGRAMS PEREFECTLY, NOTHING WAS BROKEN OR EVEN SCRATCHED. I'm amazed. Tip: I noticed a open unused area behind the battery and I put a small bag of desiccant if the unit is mounted outdoors. Small complaint is I can't adjust the sensitivity of the unit remotely. I'm using one to trigger the relay contacts in a I/O link and that works fine. I want a Insteon sounder or something that beebs like X10 has, that would be nice. Using with Insteon and X10 with no problems. The X10 network immediately got better when I started adding Insteon products.
    KELLY -- katy, TX   10/5/2013
Installed outdoors to turn on exterior lighting. It's performed well over the past month. The 1.5 hub app adds control of many of its functions remotely. Also configurable through Houselinc. Requires pressing the set button to program and configure through the hub. With Houselinc, after initial set up you can make changes which will sync the next time it is triggered, which is a bit more convenient.
    mac -- cambridge, MA   10/3/2013
Product works reasonably well. Setup can be a bit of a pain. Especially now that Smarthome and the Insteon website have both removed links to the full version of the manual!!
