Essential Info

The INSTEON 220V / 240V 30 AMP Load Controller Normally Open Relay (Dual-Band) lets you efficiently control the use of heavy duty appliances and take a step towards saving energy and cutting down on utility costs.

With the ability to control 240V appliances, you can keep an eye on some of the larger energy consumers in your home. If you're headed away on a weeks-long vacation, why bother running the water heater? Save money and energy by programing an INSTEON controller to automatically disable the water heater whenever a vacation scene is run.

Tired of the ancient analogue timer that runs your pool system? Replace it with a 240V controller and have the INSTEON Hub or other controller keep things on a schedule. Do some research with your utility company and you can even program your pool system to clean when the electric rates are at their lowest.

At the end of a stressful day at work, how nice would it be if your spa or sauna could be prepped and ready for you the moment you walk through the door? High current applications like pool pumps and electric heaters can be controlled, letting you treat your luxury home amenities just like your INSTEON-controlled lights.

Controlling loads up to 30 Amps, it allows you to use other INSTEON devices to remotely control appliances that run on higher voltage and in a normally open state. A local 'Set' button lets you toggle the attached load on and off. The relay comes with pre-configured wires and mounting hardware. There is no need to open the box for installation, simply identify the labeled wires and connect one set to your breaker panel and the other set to the high current appliance.

This switch also features INSTEON Dual-Band technology, which sends and receives INSTEON powerline and wireless radio frequency (RF) signals. This allows the module to function as a phase bridge for superior signal reliability and as an access point for INSTEON RF and battery powered devices.

The INSTEON 220V / 240V 30 AMP Load Controller is also available as a Normally Closed Relay, sold separately.

Required Accessories - Depending on your particular application, you will likely need:
4 to 6 large red wire nuts
3/4" conduit between the product and a near-by junction box
Suitable junction box for connection to existing wiring
Mounting screws

Bought and installed two three years ago, one for the spa blower and one for the poll pump. Worked fine. After three years, the pool pump switch button broke and I had to order a new one. By mistake I ordered, must of hit the buitton twice, well the fiorst one would not work after a day so I put in the second, it failed in three days. Called SH and got an rma, sent them back and got a third one. It started to fail the very first day. I checked the spec and saw the upper range of 104 F, well it was 90 today so maybe it over heated. However, the spa switch, same model but over three years old, still worked. The pool pump switch continued to fail tonight when the temp was in the low 70's. Other reviews suggest the device cannot handle the heat. In any event, three stikes and you are out.

Fine when it works, but not durable. Failed with less than 1 year of 1x/day use. Purchased Oct '12. Installed in pool house for remote control of 220V pool pump. Used for ~1 month fall '12. Used 1x/day summer-fall '13. In '14 it worked fine for two days last weekend. Now it has been doing a rapid click of death. Factory reset -- hold setup button while restoring power to the circuit till after the beeps -- does not help learned that after a 20min hold that turned out be 65 min hold !! for tech support. RMA Cross Shipped with Credit Card guarantee is only Fedex Ground, unless I pay an extra $36 ... so 5-6 business days from CA. Would not split the cost for 3day. Not stellar svc to be without a pool pump controller in the summer. Guess I'll be hot wiring it and running up/down two floors to be the manual on/off controller 'till the new one comes.
MAURICIO -- pembroke pines, FL   1/14/2014
Works flawlessly. I bought one to control my pool pump and another one to control a heat pump.
    DrLag -- Arizona   12/2/2013
Controller works great when it works, but has issues with summer heat and quality. Inside, large power resistors are used to lower the power for the electronics. They burn up in sustained ambient temperatures of 100 degrees F Arizona. Also, the internal solenoids are of good quality, but the connectors to the solenoids are definitely not rated for sustained 30 amp. A 220v 17amp load causes significant heat from these connectors that melts the wire and insulator.
    RUSSELL -- morristown, NJ   10/14/2013
Great. Easy install and it looks like it will be perfect for my application (operating a compressor)
    WASEEM -- doha, XX   8/1/2013
unable to connect with a controller.
    ROY -- christiansted, VI   7/31/2013
much to many problems with product. Very poor quality control. When and if unit works I am very please with controller but 5 out of 20 bad is not good at all.
    ARTHUR -- tenafly, NJ   7/27/2013
I use these to control my pool. Besides the convenience of not having to walk through the bushes and mud to get to my pumps it adds serious safety by keeping wet swimmers from having to go ne'er the breaker box to adjust pumps. Automating my pool also allows me to ensure the Polaris pump isn't active with ought the filter, gives me a cool down for the heater and allows remote control of lighting. A great investment!
    ROY -- christiansted, VI   7/9/2013
When it works it is great
    ROY -- christiansted, VI   6/20/2013
I have install six and two needed to be returned defective and it had taken over a month to credit my account for the first return. Lets see what happens with the second return. The unit is good if it works.
PENNY -- east hampton, CT   6/13/2013
great product, easy to install adjacent to breaker box. works great with my smartlinc. I use it to control hot water heater, just turn on for an hour prior to our morning showers, and remotely turning off/on when away. 1st month, looks like we saved about $35. Very satisfied.
Steve Alschuler -- albuquerque, NM   6/13/2013
The first one I had worked flawlessly 2 years and then stop communicating to my Insteon network. The second one lasted two days and then stopped working after 10 minutes of operation. The third one is on its way. I am in Albuquerque, NM where ambient temperatures often reach upper 90s and surely over 104 Deg F in an outdoor electrical cabinet. Devices are very heat sensitive. We are using ours to control a swimming pool pump. They probably work consistently in a conditioned environment but are very heat sensitive. SAVE YOURSELF MY HASSLES AND DON'T MOUNT OUTDOORS! The 32 Deg F to 104 Deg F is a very narrow operating range for this device, should be redesigned for a wider temperature operating range!!!
CHRISTOPHER -- cave creek, AZ   5/29/2013
Must realize that we program in the engaged position, i.e. on. That wasn't clear in the instructions.
    EclipseHA -- phoenix, AZ   5/7/2013
Got it today, installed in maybe an hour for a water heater I had a home depo timer so I just had to add an an extra 4x4 box mounted to a stud. Linked it to my custom controller SW easily. The ONLY issue I've seen is that there was a small green sticker over NO or NC to indicate which type it was that came off as soon as I unpacked it, and that was fixed by marking it with a sharpie!
    Jon -- minneapolis, MN   4/18/2013
Bought three of these units, which I used in a system to remotely control three 240 V baseboard heaters in a cabin in northern Minnesota. Be careful if you want to use these devices in sub zero conditions, since they are not rated for below zero. Not sure if the low temperatures were the problem, but these units would turn themselves on without us commanding them to do so. And after a year or so of use, they would not link to the Smart home I/O link either. Had to replace the Insteon system with a hard wired relay system, which works ok.
    David C -- Scottsdale   3/6/2013
Overheats easily and shuts off. After a short amount of time the internals burn up. I use them on pool pumps and I've gone through three of them so far. NEED S TO BE REDESIGNED!!!
    Josh -- Florida   1/4/2013
Hard to rate seeing that I've never seen the product. This was in-stock when i ordered it. 2 dayys later, Smarthome said it was on backorder shipping in a week. A week came and went and the delivery date was modified out a few days. This stroke continued for weeks until I checked it today - now it's a month out. Very poor marks for being clueless about your delivery dates. Worse yet is Smarthome's telephone response for sales, support, or customer care. Prepare to have to listen to their nasty music-on-hold for a long time if you call.
    ERNIE -- princeton, WI   10/8/2012
We installed 3 of these and one was bad on instal but it was very easy to get a replacement for it at no charge. I was surprised by the build of the unit that it wssn't 3R rated but it was an easy install and worked good
sterls -- miramar beach, Florida   7/31/2012
Having problems with running the load controller on a lawn sprinkler pump. I have replace it twice and I think there may be an issue with contolling inductive loads motors. I have one on the hot water heater and it works great but for a motor - there may be a problem. 2 times is enough, time to try some thing else. For a resistance load like a hot water heater, I would rate it at 5 stars
Glenn Dobbs -- bakersfield, California   7/26/2012
Large amount of bad prodouct shipping. Then very hard to get replacement. They talk the talk But do not walk the walk. The Order desk needs to go though a how to talk to CuSTOMERS class. Just try to get to some one of any manage postion-they hide behind phone
