Essential Info

FanLinc is designed to easily incorporate both fan speed and light control within your INSTEON network. It is a dual-load responder simultaneously acting as a light fixture dimmer plus a 4 speed fan controller (Off, Low, Medium & High). Control the fan speed or lighting kit wirelessly from any INSTEON controller, be it a handheld remote or wall keypad. Tie it in with a computer controller that can trigger all the fans in the house to turn on (at a predetermined speed) to help circulate the air, reducing costs associated with running your air conditioner.

FanLinc is yet another great addition to the ever expanding family of INSTEON products. View all INSTEON products here.

fanlinc diagramHow FanLinc Works
FanLinc is compatible with most ceiling fans and installs inside the fan cowling between the fan and incoming power. You'll want to make sure you have access to both the fan and (if your fan has a lighting kit attached) the light control wires.

Before finalizing your FanLinc installation you'll want to link it to your selected controllers. Because you don't want to be removing your ceiling fan every time you want to add or remove links, we recommend using software such as HouseLinc to manage all of this from your computer.

Note: FanLinc is not compatible with fans that have remote control built into the motor.

Control Ideas
While there are a wide variety of INSTEON controllers to choose from, let us provide some suggestions...
  • For a truly wireless solution use a handheld 8-scene Mini Remote to control the ceiling fan from the couch, bedside or mount it anywhere on the wall using a wall mount bracket. Links between Mini Remote and FanLinc can be made manually however, software configuration recommended.

  • For a more permanent solution, go with an in-wall 6-button KeypadLinc. KeypadLinc replaces any existing wall switch and provides wireless communications to the FanLinc. Links between KeypadLinc and FanLinc can be made manually however, software configuration recommended. pre-labeled FanLinc buttons or Custom-etched keys are sold separately.

FanLinc Control Options

  • Unlock features and manage links, create events and more using hardware/software combinations such as such as HouseLinc or ISY-99.

Dual-Band
FanLinc is dual band so it has the ability to communicate using both the electrical wires in the home (powerline) as well as using radio frequency (RF). This increases reliability not only for FanLinc but for all devices on an INSTEON home control network (similar to the function of an Access Point).

Coundn't use would not fit in fan
    BRETT -- novelty, OH   5/25/2013
Too big. They say it fits "most" fan cowlings, I'd say it fits "some".
    CHARLES E -- de kalb, IL   5/24/2013
Works great, but still hums a bit
JESSE -- elko new market, MN   5/23/2013
Works well with HouseLinc, fan portion does not work with HUB for Insteon
    JOHN -- dallas, TX   5/17/2013
I little tricky making it all fit the fan BUT my wife loves having a RemoteLinc to control the fan in the middle of the night.
    RALF -- tuscaloosa, AL   5/5/2013
Love it, working fine without any issues so far.
    MICHAEL -- ridgecrest, CA   4/20/2013
Works as described. Too bad the firmware could not be programed to adjust the fan spped the user would want for L-M-H
    DON -- cypress, CA   3/25/2013
like many who have casablanca fans this it not quite a direct replacement. The module has some limitations 3 speeds not 6 like casablanca. also no reverse feature. BUT you can add that function with their micro link and a relay. Full implementation to replace a casablanca system is NOT for beginners.

Instead & Smarthome. Thank you very much for listening to your customers. I purchased 4 of these - they work great!
MICHAEL TODD -- great falls, SC   2/25/2013
Had a little trouble getting it set up but once I got it connected and set up it works great. I will be ordering more switches to complete the whole house.

Great Idea. Works Well. Installs Easily. But I hate the implementation of these things. You need seperate buttons, and seperate scenes for each speed of each fan, then an additional button to control the lighting. Gets to be a little excessive when you have multiple Fanlincs. Granular management of each fanlinc would require using precious room slots for each fanlinc - within Smartlinc. Fan control should be on 1 button somehow. Either a single/double/triple-click for low/med/hi, a special toggle assignment in keypadlincs, or SOMETHING. Also getting a ton of flickering on the incandescent light load of these all 4 of them. Love insteon products, but getting a little irritated with the overlooked product idiosyncrasies of these devices that people need to put up with every day since they're used to run their homes.

My first unit was defective but the replacement works just as advertised.
    chubby -- Deep South   2/20/2013
Works well. As far as the speed low is really low. Medium and high are where they should be. The thing would not fit inside my cowling. I had to buy a angle mount because it was deeper and then if fit just barely. I guess it depends on the type of box your fan in mounted to. Mine is a steel box that is probable only 1 1/2 inches deep. If it were deeper I could have stood it up one in in the box one end in the cowling.Oh well it worked and it only cost me $15 additional. I have too much money anyway.

Just installed my first FanLinc today. I actually bought it quite some time ago but was procrastinating about installing it due to my reluctance to pull my cowling and wiring on my fan; however, everything went really well and was way easier than I expected. Pulling the cowling and wires on my fan only took a couple minutes and within about five more minutes I had the FanLinc wired in. A couple notes: first, INSTEON doesn't allow you to control the fan at the Set buttons I think it's a safety thing - wouldn't want to accidentally hit the button during installation and have the fan whip on while you're standing on a ladder. So testing that the fan will actually run is not possible unless done remotely. While the FanLinc was still hanging next to my cowling, I tested the Fan control via HouseLinc. Using this method, I found that I had reversed the FAN and LIGHT load wires Hampton Bay forum was incorrect. This test prevented me from finishing the installation and having to take the whole thing apart again. Second, make sure the wire nuts are nice and tight and give each wire a little tug before you move on. I had to do some cramming to fit the wiring into the J-box above my fan so that the FanLinc could slide into the fan's bracket. During this process, one of the wires wiggled out of the nut and I had to take it all down again to re-do that wire nut. Using HouseLinc to set up the FanLinc was a breeze once I got it all wired in. I had already picked up some of the awesome little fan control keys for my KeypadLinc, so I just had to create four scenes in HouseLinc to support it: Fan Off, Low, Med, High and add the Keypad buttons to those scenes. It made control of the fan so obvious that anyone can intuitively know how to use it. A word of warning, setting this up manually would probably take a really long time, since you have to do inter-linked buttons on the keypad where pushing fan off turns on that LED but turns off the fan low, fan med, fan high LEDs as well as having to link to the different fan modes. My only grip aside from the lack of test-ability is that it was pretty tough to get the FanLinc into the bracket next to the wires that were running up into the J-box from the fan. I guess this is pretty much true with all products of this type that are on the market, but it's something to keep in mind.

Overall product is ok, however there are two issues I noticed: 1) The two bright RED LED's on the product can't be turned off (or I can't find the setting in the interface or instructions) so there is a nice RED glow on my ceiling where the fan cap meets the ceiling (small gap) 2) The module is not good at dimming LED lights, unfortunately my fan now has 3 LED lights, and one regular bulb. Without the regular bulb the dimming is minimal - it does however shutoff completely when using LED's which is still better than some other similar remote fan modules.
    DONALD -- abilene, TX   2/7/2013
Great product! I installed this into a fan I originally placed into service 30 years ago. This fan had a "high" speed setting that would nearly launch an ultralight plane, so I set the mechanical fan switch to medium speed. I love the new "three speeds" the fan presents now. The wall switch (for light control only) was missing a neutral, so I used the new insteon 2 wire switch (Part # 2474DWH) for that purpose and capped off the blue light lead on the fanlinc. The fanlinc is connected to an unswitched Hot and Neutral. I link and control everything in my house with houselinc software, so the setup was simple. I am looking forward to programing this fan to operate for 15 minutes On and 5 minutes Off all night during the summer. The timing and speed combinations are unlimited. I also recommend a remotelinc control to manage fan speed and light. I mounted mine to the center bed post with a 3m strip. ( Yes I had my lady's permission. )
JAY -- cedar rapids, IA   2/4/2013
This does exactly what they say it'll do. This is a good product.
    STEVE -- euless, TX   2/1/2013
These are over-priced and over-sized for my fan applications. They would not fit in my fan hanger brackets. Much better to buy Harbor Breeze fan remote systems, for less than half the cost.
    JOHN -- monee, IL   1/14/2013
I've installed a total of four of these controllers in my house. All work fine. Some other reviews commented on issues with the "LOW" speed setting, I don't see the problem. Mine are connected to Hunter ceiling fans, some 48" four bladed fans, and the largest is a 60" five bladed fan. All work fine on all three speed settings. Kind of difficult using the set buttons up inside the fan canopy, but I don't see an easy way around that, this is the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5
Sam -- lago vista, TX   12/20/2012
I have installed a fanlinc in every room. I am very happy to see the product. It works every time. HERE'S THE REASON I WILL NOT RECOMMEND... I have always run my ceiling fans at the 'medium speed'. That is no longer possible. The 'medium' setting from fanlinc is equal to the fan's original low speed. The 'low' setting from fanlinc does not allow enough power for some of my fans to start rotating. I wish I had waited for the kinks to be resolved. I will end up replacing 10 of them... I'm not happy.
