Overview

  • Wires in behind your existing switches or fixtures
  • Sense wires allow for control via a connected, hard-wired switch
  • Compatible with latching, single momentary and dual momentary switches
  • Programmable on-level and ramp rate

Essential Info

Adding remote control to wired lights usually means replacing switches, not any more. With INSTEON's new dual-band Micro Dimmer Module, you can keep your existing antique, toggle or decorative wall switches while adding the customizable, dimmable remote control functionality of a SwitchLinc Dimmer. Customize your lights with a preset brightness level and ramp rate, then control it from any INSTEON controller.

This compact module installs behind your existing switch, giving it full INSTEON automation while retaining local control at the switch by way of sense wires. Connect the sense wires to any style wall switch to match any type of designer theme (antique, push-button, metal, etc.) Micro Dimmer is also so that it can be installed as an in-line module within a fixture box, providing remote control dimming without having to run wires to a wall switch.

INSTEON also offers a Micro On/Off Module and a Micro Open/Close Module.

What's Included

  • INSTEON Micro Dimmer Module
  • Quick-Start Guide
  • More Info

INSTEON Micro Dimmer is compatible with latching, single momentary and dual momentary switches. By default, it comes programmed for latching switches such as paddles and toggles; it is easily configured for single and dual momentary switches with a simple reprogramming procedure during installation.

Due to its hidden nature, we highly recommend using a home management controller (such as HouseLinc) or the free INSTEON app with INSTEON Hub to manage Micro Open/Close.

These are the perfect choice if you want to control an outside light that is remote from your switch. This item fits nicely inside the box. The sense wires made me nervous when working with them. This item makes a standard switch a three way switch. Meaning if the light switch is and a signal is sent to turn on the light the light comes on. To turn off locally you flip the switch to the up position, and the light goes off.

I'm using 2 of these paired with a 6 button KPL dimmer to control lighting in my media room. This lets me control the lights in three groups to create different fade/dim scenes, or control has one entire group. Works awesome!

Overall a great product. I'm using with a double toggle Decora switch in a single-gang box to control one of two loads. It was a pretty tight fit as the switch itself was larger than most. It did, however, make this installation possible since I was unable to install a two-gang box yet needed Insteon control of one of the two devices.
    BILL -- camarillo, CA   11/18/2013
Installed easily. Replaces faulty ToggleLinc. Well built.
    MICHAEL -- middletown, NJ   9/2/2013
Works great. I used a couple of these for devices that I didn't need an actual dimmer switch. The devices are small, but are still a bit of a squeeze when installing in place of a switch in a box with other wiring in it.
PAT -- san luis obispo, CA   8/3/2013
    Doesn't play well with transformers
checko -- los angeles, CA   7/29/2013
Would give a 4-star if not for the installation. Works great once installed, but the installation process is definitely a challenge if you're installing into a switch box with anything else in it like wires. I'm not an electrician, but know a bit, and had a difficult time getting it installed and working on one of the switches in my two-switch set-up. The compact design of it is misleading as the buttons and LED will invariable be crammed into the switch box and not viewable and / or unreachable once installed. The sensor wires are very thin, felt too delicate and proved challenging to thread with copper wire of standard thickness. Once installed it works great but I'm not looking forward to having to access the unit for any needed fixes. Hopefully for 2.0 they'll beef up the wires and design a smaller or differently shaped unit that fits in a switch box easier.

Overall – great idea – however the execution needs help. The whole thing seems extremely fragile – the screws can be easily stripped if not careful. The sense wires feel like they are about 30 Gauge wire – ridiculously frail – I don’t get why insteon couldn’t spring for a little thicker wire, very difficult trying to join 30 Gauge hair-thin wire with a solid copper wire in a wire nut. Finally, it would be nice if you could configure the local relay to be able to disable it from enabling the load. In my use case using a series of outdoor motion detecting flood lights, I wanted the sense to broadcast a motion being detected – then have the software/controller determine response based on daylight/other factors. I had to buy 2 modules for each of my outdoor motion sensing floodlights – one to sense motion and another to enable the load to the floodlights – total pain and added expense. Overall – I gave it 2 stars because it needs help – total first gen product..

Easy to install and link via ISY-994i. I'm using it to drive 4 outdoor LED flood lights. It is buried in a junction box in the attic since the flood lights were added on later. With this, no need to run a switch down the wall! The connections holes are great for a single 14ga wire. 2 14ga will not fit.
    JOHN -- alexandria, VA   5/24/2013
Required factory reset, twice, but then worked fine.
    ROBERT -- toronto, ON   5/23/2013
Small device. Can see a hint of the red/green indicator light between decora switch to cover plate gap.
    ISAAC -- seattle, WA   5/23/2013
Every couple of days the sensing mode defaults back to "Latching" from "Single Momentary." When this happens you can't turn the light off locally, you have to log into it via a controller (Android App) to turn it off. Then to reset the module, you have to turn on a computer, open HouseLinc software and have it reset the unit mode. (because the module's buttons are not accessable inside the lamp)
    DAVID -- wagarville, AL   5/13/2013
Great unit, I have it mounted behind a switch inside the box and it fits fine. Very versatile unit.
    RONALD -- sewickley, PA   5/9/2013
Very much the same as the standard Insteon dimmers. Probably best to install using flexible wiring, solid wires might put too much mechanical load on the small connectors.
    ANGELA -- kokomo, IN   4/29/2013
I received one DOA. They work great though besides that. They're well constructed and extremely responsive. They're also very durable - Able to stand extreme heat of halogen light bulbs. My two complaints are the sense wires cannot be removed and that its difficult to use the buttons and set up the module with the lighting fixture installed. It's also difficult to put two in a single gang electrical box…actually nearly impossible. It would probably have been a lot easier if this was being installed new rather than renovation.
    Jim -- waterford, MI   4/28/2013
Device is compact and easy to install and offers a lot of flexibility to install into tight spaces. I would have given it 5 stars, however it does not work well for LED lighting. I purchased it to work in conjunction with a FanLinc as the FanLinc cannot adequately control and dim LED lights. This module also fails in that regard - in fact it flashes every time a command is sent on the Insteon network - even when the command is not directed toward this module! Anyway, hoping Smarthome and Insteon find a way to incorporate the technology used in their new 8-button dimmers into this module and FanLinc.
    Bob -- Maryland   3/30/2013
Great device, easy to install. A much better solution for 3 way switch replacements as a single module is all that is needed.
    BERNARD -- hermansville, MI   3/19/2013
well built and easy to connect, works well. But may be big for a standard size box depending on how many wires are in the box also. All my boxes are deep making the fit easy.
    GUY -- linden, MI   2/27/2013
haven't been able to get them to work yet. Instructions leave a lot unclear.
ALEJANDRO -- buenos aires, XX   2/21/2013
Great product. Easy to program. Very stable. Mini size allows it to be installed in any place imaginable. Programable switch mode is a great feature. Recommended.
