Essential Info

The USB INSTEON PowerLinc Modem is a USB-based home automation interface that allows PC- and hardware-based automation controllers to control INSTEON-compatible lights, appliances, heating/air conditioning systems and alarm systems directly via the INSTEON network. The dual-band interface sends and receives both powerline and radio frequency (RF) INSTEON signals, so it doubles as an Access Point. This makes it ideal for new INSTEON installations if you have or plane to use an RF-only INSTEON-compatible remote, thermostat, motion sensor and contact sensor. The RF signal can bypass electrical noise or attenuation near the PC and it pulls many of the "distant" INSTEON devices one hop closer, which can expand the size of potential installations into even larger homes and commercial buildings.

New features:
  • Built-in Dual-Band with RF function, acts like an Access Point for phase bridging and RF to/from power line
  • 1023 links (compared to around 800 links previously)
  • Added a beep sounder
  • Red/Green LED light
  • Supports faster reading and writing of the PLM's database by another controller
  • Much lighter weight
  • No pass-through outlet
Please Note: The controller connected to the USB INSTEON PowerLinc Modem must remain powered on and running the controller program connected to the controller or host at all times of usage. Additionally, the dual-band interface does not supply power to external devices.

Installed the device with the intent to control existing X10 light controllers. It will on-off a single lamp in the same room, but will not control the other X10 devices.
NICK -- altamonte springs, FL   6/27/2014
    Great product for home automation
    shawngates -- calif   5/27/2014
has worked for years with QWHomeAutomation but had to plug mine several yrs old into a filterlinc filtered port QWautomation has a free program and android app, web interface for iphone. Works great. After several yrs of use mine stopped working - after much struggle tried hard reset holding set button down and plugging in found that it would work if plugged into a filtered port of filterlinc. So it likely is just using IR but since insteon is a mesh it works fine.....i think the powerline part got damaged tried turning off all house ckt breakers exept one to no avail.
JERRY -- temple terrace, FL   5/24/2014
This is a replacement for a unit that went bad. It had worked reliably for over 2 years. The only thing that needs to be added is the capability to upload a schedule so it can run stand-a-lone. The current unit MUST be connected to the computer at all times.
    JOSENIVALDO -- jaguariuna, XX   5/4/2014
Nice to control Insteon through software.
    ROBERT -- valrico, FL   4/29/2014
    Works great.
    JOSEPH -- dublin, OH   4/17/2014
The software that I was instructed to use does not work on the new Win 7 PC that I bought. Very dissatisfied.
David -- san diego, California   4/16/2014
Unimpressed: My second 2413U unit just failed after 2 years. It'll go in the junk bin with the 10+ Insteon light switches that have failed.
    Frank -- New Mexico   4/2/2014
Works very well for Insteon products, some X10 not all. Word of advice from experience: put in a whole house surge protector. It will keep this and your other Insteon devices working much longer. Power surges don't always kill your devices, they can just make them sick, then sicker etc. My system works very well with the whole house surge protection.
    JERRY -- reading, PA   3/28/2014
This item does exactly as the description says. 100% satisfied.
    RAYFORD -- huntsville, TX   2/20/2014
Works as advertised. Easy plug and play installation. HomeLink software somewhat difficult to understand and program. Needed help in programming but once programmed worked fine.
JEFF -- casa grande, AZ   2/7/2014
This was a replacement unit for one received defective. Had an 8 button keypad go bad after 1 week and had to be replaced. Not a good track record for Insteon poducts.
    JAMES -- denville, NJ   1/31/2014
I had hoped this was a stand alone host like the 2412N but it is not, just a computer to power line modem. It does not allow a connection to the 2412N for upload either.
THOMAS -- litchfield park, AZ   1/18/2014
This was a replacement for one that failed just after the warranty ran out. Smarthome investigated and decided graciously to allow it as a factory defect as it went completely dead. They quickly shipped the replacement which works flawlessly and even better than the old one even when that one was new. I'm extremely pleased and love my Insteon stuff that I have in practically every room in the house.
CRAIG -- salt lake city, UT   1/12/2014
Works great. Helps me to automate my home with my computer as the control.
    MSJ -- Massachusetts   1/12/2014
I have invested over a thousand dollars in Insteon products over the last 5 years. They mostly work great at first, but now almost half of them have started to malfunction in a variety of ways. I thought these were a step UP from my cheap X10 switches, but in fact, the junky X10 switches, which cost less than 1/10 as much as the Insteon, have held up very well. Avoid Smarthome altogether. I've contacted Smarthome - they are not interested in standing by their products.
    STEPHEN -- concord, MA   1/10/2014
Does just what it is supposed to do. No issues.
    Chris -- kirkland, WA   1/6/2014
I also just had this PLM fail like so many others. Mine did not make it to the 2 year point. If this unit fails again I will be looking for other options. I cannot have all my lighting set up on timers and then have them discontinue while I order an $80 item very year or so. Please make something more reliable. It works good with the ISY while it is working.
    TOM -- braselton, GA   1/4/2014
I was using X10 for years and decided to buy this PLM to start using the native Insteon protocol. I having it working with the free open-source MisterHouse program running on Linux and it works great with sending and receiving both Insteon and X10 protocols.
    JC3 -- clinton twp, MI   1/4/2014
Does not connect to all devices in the house. Very slow updates. Poor technology. Moving to another system.
