Essential Info

The Serial INSTEON PowerLinc Modem is a serial-based home automation interface that allows PC- and hardware-based automation controllers to control INSTEON-compatible lights, appliances, heating/air conditioning systems and alarm systems directly via the INSTEON network. This home automation interface uses simple RS-232 commands, allowing any device with a programmable serial port to send INSTEON commands easily, making controllers such as SimpleHomeNet's and Universal Devices' IP bridges instantly INSTEON compatible. The dual-band interface sends and receives both powerline and radio frequency (RF) INSTEON signals, so it doubles as an Access Point. This makes it ideal for new INSTEON installs and if have or plan to use an RF-only INSTEON-compatible remote, thermostat, motion sensor and contact sensor. The RF signal can bypass electrical noise or attenuation near the PC and it pulls many of the "distant" INSTEON devices one hop closer, which can expand the size of potential installations into even larger homes and commercial buildings.

New features:
  • Built-in Dual-Band with RF function, acts like an Access Point for phase bridging and RF to/from power line
  • 1023 links (compared to around 800 links previously)
  • Added a beep sounder
  • Red/Green LED light
  • Supports faster reading and writing of the PLM's database by another controller
  • Much lighter weight
  • No pass-through outlet
Please Note: The controller connected to the Serial INSTEON PowerLinc Modem must remain powered on and running the controller program connected to the controller or host at all times of usage. Additionally, the dual-band interface does not supply power to external devices.

    Ideal for Developer Use
Hardware developers with products that include RS232 ports can use the Serial INSTEON PowerLinc Modem to send and receive INSTEON communications. This relieves developers from embedding INSTEON chips inside their devices and provides a quick way to market without having to go through electronics re-designs or costly safety agency approvals. It also provides electronic TTL lines for direct connection to systems with embedded processors.

Please note that developing application and controls for the PLM is not for the casual home automation enthusiast. Due to the nature of this product, Smarthome's technical support staff cannot offer programming support for developers. We cannot assist in the troubleshooting or development of applications and/or code.

If you are interested in developing software for the PowerLinc or for more information about becoming an INSTEON developer please click here.

Advanced support for INSTEON developers is sold separately; click here for more information.

    X10 Compatible
The Serial INSTEON PowerLinc Modem is fully INSTEON compatible and X10 ready. Homeowners with existing X10 networks can easily migrate to an INSTEON network without having to discard all their existing X10 devices. X10 ready means that it can respond to X10 commands from an X10 controller and it can send X10 commands to X10 devices. Please note that INSTEON devices repeat INSTEON signals but not X10.

Junk DON'T BUY Stay away from all of these cheep china made products.
    Paul M -- los altos, CA   7/4/2014
Add another one on the pile of people who have their unit fail at 2.5 years. Worked flawlessly and then failed. Thankfully my credit card extended warranty covers the first year after the manufacturer's warranty! I ordered a replacement from Amazon, and that one failed immediately. So now I'm waiting for a replacement for my replacement. Unfortunately the ISY device I'm using doesn't support USB or I'd be considering the 2413U, although perhaps that has the same reliability problem this one does?
    Jens R. -- New York   6/22/2014
Great when it works ... As many others have reported, mine has failed after 26 months, putting it outside of the warranty period. Not only are my lights connected to it, my entire lawn sprinkler system is too. Now I'm faced with having to rewire my entire sprinkler setup back to the originally installed controller or having my lawn and border plants die. Has no one considered a class action suit against a device that almost seems programmed to fail immediately after the warranty has expired?
    Jeff -- oakland, California   6/19/2014
Oh no, mine just failed after 2 years and 3 months. They gave me an RMA though and I'll get a replacement when they are back in stock. I love the Insteon universe of products even in the face of somewhat frequent failures. They've never left me holding the bag with a piece of dead equipment.
    MICHAEL S. -- union city, CA   6/19/2014
Ordered as a precautionary backup. I am so dependent on my Insteon system that I can't afford a failure of more than a few hours. My original is still working though after 3 years of daily service.
    Luis -- ottawa,Canada   6/18/2014
Don't expect this modem to work for more than two, two and a half years, this is known issue by Insteon and they are not doing anything about it. They know that we don't have a choice but to buy another one When it works it works well
    Michael -- sacramento, Calfornia   6/17/2014
I hate to pile on here but being honest I just ordered or should I say back-ordered my third PLM in 6 years. I'm not sure what causes these units to fail so quickly but clearly it is in need of a re-design. Smarthome: Please add some passive or active cooling or whatever it takes to make these more reliable. As Don from Maryland points out the PLM is the backbone of a managed Insteon installation. My $400 ISY Home Automation Controller is useless without a working 2413s and I'm coming home to a dark house once again.
    Don -- Maryland   6/11/2014
OK, now I'm on my 3rd one after 3 years. Fortunately the first one died within warranty still had to pay shipping. Clearly these are very poorly made....it's surprising, actually, as it's THE interface between the Insteon devices and the *expensive* home controllers they want to sell. Without this device the whole system just fails utterly. As you can clearly see from the other postings you had best think REAL HARD before investing in an Insteon home control system. BTW, they didn't even have any in stock to replace my failed one, so I'll have to wait for several weeks before the system will work again. I'm guessing that no one from upper management even bother to read these reviews - or worse, they just don't care! I had to give it 1-star or the review wouldn't post...in reality, if you consider all of the other people who have the same exact complaint, I wouldn't have even given 1-star.
    Jon J -- akron, OH   5/31/2014
Don't expect technical support when this quits working.
Super Crazed and Unhappy -- Florida   5/30/2014
Have to say not happy 3rd unit in lifetime 3 years this one only lasted 7 months
    Jahn -- New Jersey   5/9/2014
This is crazy. Mine just failed and I went to check when I ordered it : April 04, 2012 I guess they only last 2 years. POOR QUALITY!
    WILLIAM -- madison, AL   5/4/2014
This is the second one of these I have bought, to replace one that quit after 1 year. Not happy about the lifetime of these things.
    KHALED -- richmond, TX   5/3/2014
Probably one of the "poorest" made devices , I have been through 3 in 3 years ...... RIDICULOUS !
    Victor -- Atlanta   4/29/2014
Failed in two years just like everyone else. Worked great until failure.
Steve -- long beach, CA   4/27/2014
And yet ONE MORE FAILED 2413s!!! I too am dead in the water. I'm sure I'm right around the 2 year mark but will check with Smarthome tommorrow Monday 04/27/14. I'm beginning to think we are paying Smarthome to be their beta testers in their never ending R&D for STABLE devices!! I really can't afford much more of this.
    Alex O -- cary, NC   4/25/2014
Gosh, same experience here: completely died 2 years and 2 months after installation. What's with that? Nice when it works, but poor longevity.
Dan Beck -- salt lake city, Utah   4/22/2014
I guess I just need to plan on replacing this every two years. Mine died just a few months after the warranty expired. While it worked it lived up to expectations but it really should last longer.
    Lou -- United States   4/1/2014
Add me to the list of death just after warranty. 2 years and 2 months. POS. I should have kept my 2412s. Now nothing works and they don't even have them in stock.
JamZero -- great falls, VA   3/28/2014
Least you guys got 2 years out of the device before it failed. Mine only lasted 12 months! Device works great when it works. Starting to think I may need to keeps spares around the house for the insteon network. 2413S has been on backorder for over 3 weeks now. So lighting in the house is dead in its tracks till its replacement comes which is annoying.
    MICHAEL -- azle, TX   3/28/2014
PowerLinc Modem performs perfectly with our ISY994i Insteon Controller. It provides network connectivity without having to worry about overpower on the ISY994i. I would highly recommend this unit if you are using Insteon equipment
