Essential Info

The Serial INSTEON PowerLinc Modem is a serial-based home automation interface that allows PC- and hardware-based automation controllers to control INSTEON-compatible lights, appliances, heating/air conditioning systems and alarm systems directly via the INSTEON network. This home automation interface uses simple RS-232 commands, allowing any device with a programmable serial port to send INSTEON commands easily, making controllers such as SimpleHomeNet's and Universal Devices' IP bridges instantly INSTEON compatible. The dual-band interface sends and receives both powerline and radio frequency (RF) INSTEON signals, so it doubles as an Access Point. This makes it ideal for new INSTEON installs and if have or plan to use an RF-only INSTEON-compatible remote, thermostat, motion sensor and contact sensor. The RF signal can bypass electrical noise or attenuation near the PC and it pulls many of the "distant" INSTEON devices one hop closer, which can expand the size of potential installations into even larger homes and commercial buildings.

New features:
  • Built-in Dual-Band with RF function, acts like an Access Point for phase bridging and RF to/from power line
  • 1023 links (compared to around 800 links previously)
  • Added a beep sounder
  • Red/Green LED light
  • Supports faster reading and writing of the PLM's database by another controller
  • Much lighter weight
  • No pass-through outlet
Please Note: The controller connected to the Serial INSTEON PowerLinc Modem must remain powered on and running the controller program connected to the controller or host at all times of usage. Additionally, the dual-band interface does not supply power to external devices.

    Ideal for Developer Use
Hardware developers with products that include RS232 ports can use the Serial INSTEON PowerLinc Modem to send and receive INSTEON communications. This relieves developers from embedding INSTEON chips inside their devices and provides a quick way to market without having to go through electronics re-designs or costly safety agency approvals. It also provides electronic TTL lines for direct connection to systems with embedded processors.

Please note that developing application and controls for the PLM is not for the casual home automation enthusiast. Due to the nature of this product, Smarthome's technical support staff cannot offer programming support for developers. We cannot assist in the troubleshooting or development of applications and/or code.

If you are interested in developing software for the PowerLinc or for more information about becoming an INSTEON developer please click here.

Advanced support for INSTEON developers is sold separately; click here for more information.

    X10 Compatible
The Serial INSTEON PowerLinc Modem is fully INSTEON compatible and X10 ready. Homeowners with existing X10 networks can easily migrate to an INSTEON network without having to discard all their existing X10 devices. X10 ready means that it can respond to X10 commands from an X10 controller and it can send X10 commands to X10 devices. Please note that INSTEON devices repeat INSTEON signals but not X10.

Add me to the list of death just after warranty. 2 years and 2 months. POS. I should have kept my 2412s. Now nothing works and they don't even have them in stock.
JamZero -- great falls, VA   3/28/2014
Least you guys got 2 years out of the device before it failed. Mine only lasted 12 months! Device works great when it works. Starting to think I may need to keeps spares around the house for the insteon network. 2413S has been on backorder for over 3 weeks now. So lighting in the house is dead in its tracks till its replacement comes which is annoying.
    MICHAEL -- azle, TX   3/28/2014
PowerLinc Modem performs perfectly with our ISY994i Insteon Controller. It provides network connectivity without having to worry about overpower on the ISY994i. I would highly recommend this unit if you are using Insteon equipment
    Steve -- North Carolina   3/27/2014
This is my 3rd unit in 6 years. They only last about 26 months. That's it. What's up with that.
    NORMAN -- pierrefonds, QC   3/20/2014
Original unit died, Smartlabs replaced slightly past warranty. Too bad original unit died so soon but customer service was excellent.
    EdwardG -- Los Angeles   3/3/2014
Same problem others have posted here. After 2 years and 4 months my 2413S failed. If so many others are having the same experience then Smarthome should extend the warranty or make the product more robust. I guess there's no downside for them in planned obsolesce.
Larry Ullen -- henderson, Nevada   2/21/2014
Worked Fine. Wish I had a phone interface for all my old X10 devices. I am having to go thru a computer that needs to be always on.
CRAIG -- elk grove, CA   2/21/2014
So far so good. This was a replacement for one the failed.
    DAVID -- lititz, PA   2/21/2014
This was a replacement. The old unit was 2 years old. So, while this unit works fine, if I lose another in 2 years I might change my mind. Until then, I'll chalk it up to infant mortality.
Chris -- mission viejo, CA   2/9/2014
My 2413s is connected to an ISY-99i in a house with 50+ Insteon devices. Burned out this weekend after 35 months. Just ordered my second one.
    Sad -- FAA   2/7/2014
Like other comments, my older version failed after about 2 years and a light switch. Fine when it works, but quality seems low.
    DANIEL -- suffield, CT   2/3/2014
Works great. Disappointed that I had to buy this in addition to a new controller because two other Insteon units from Smarthome (controller no longer made and a lamp unit) both died after 2 years use, but this seems to be working just fine.
    KENNETH -- sudbury, MA   2/2/2014
Needed to replace an older 2413S that did not recognize X-10 from the powerline. Installation went OK but it took a long time for my UDI ISY994i to realize the PLM had been replaced. Now I see X-10 commands in the activity log in my mixed system.
    ERIC -- seabrook, NH   1/13/2014
The old one burned out after two years. Seems short for modern electronics.
    JC3 -- clinton twp, MI   1/9/2014
Response time is slow. It does work as stated.
    DALE -- spencer, OK   1/5/2014
This was to replace one that gave up. It works fine
    NEIL -- romeoville, IL   1/1/2014
    Nice
    John -- denver, CO   12/31/2013
Like the others below, this is my second unit in two years. Not very encouraging as this is the main interface for my ISY-99 and soon to be ISY-994. If Z wave were a bit cheaper I probably would have gone with that.
GERALD -- beverly hills, CA   12/22/2013
After several tries, I got the device(s) working. The problem was a simple one, but a technical person had to find it for me. I appreciated your willingness to work with me to make the installation successful.
    Don -- San Diego   12/18/2013
Failed after 2 years also. Like a time bomb. I hope Insteon takes these comments serious. I can't sell this!
