The USB INSTEON PowerLinc Modem is a USB home automation interface that allows PC-based automation controllers to control INSTEON-compatible lights, appliances, heating/air conditioning systems and alarm systems directly via the INSTEON network. Other PowerLinc Options: PowerLinc Modem - INSTEON Serial InterfacePowerLinc Modem - INSTEON Serial Interface (Dual-Band)*PowerLinc Modem - INSTEON USB Interface (Dual-Band)** The dual-band interfaces send and receive both powerline and radio frequency (RF) INSTEON signals, so they doubles as an Access Point. However, dual-band interfaces do not supply power to external devices; the interfaces without dual-band do.Note: The PC connected to the USB INSTEON PowerLinc Modem must remain powered on and running the home automation software at all times of usage. Important Note: This PowerLinc interface is not compatible with HouseLinc Desktop Software. A HouseLinc 2-enabled interface is available with HouseLinc - INSTEON Desktop Software in USB, Serial, USB (Dual-Band)* or Serial (Dual-Band)*. * The dual-band interface included with these HouseLinc kits sends and receives both powerline and radio frequency (RF) INSTEON signals, so it doubles as an Access Point.

No More Fights over the COM Ports
Unlike other home automation interfaces, which use the slower RS-232 communication protocol, the USB INSTEON PowerLinc Modem transfers data at much higher speeds. Best of all, it plugs into any USB port or expansion hub so there's no need to plug and unplug other peripherals like PDAs, scanners or printers when you connect it to your computer. In fact, many new computers, in particular laptops, don't include serial ports any longer, which will make using serial-based interfaces expensive and difficult to use.
X10 Compatible
The USB INSTEON PowerLinc Modem is fully INSTEON compatible and X10 ready. Homeowners with existing X10 networks can easily migrate to an INSTEON network without having to discard all their existing X10 devices. X10 ready means that it can respond to X10 commands from an X10 controller and it can send X10 commands to X10 devices. Please note that INSTEON devices repeat INSTEON signals but not X10.
Don't Block your Outlets
The USB INSTEON PowerLinc Modem includes Smarthome's innovative pass-through AC outlet on the front of the unit. This outlet allows you to plug in additional AC devices. While the outlet doesn't have any control features, it really helps against "power strip build-up."
