Essential Info

The USB INSTEON PowerLinc Modem is a USB home automation interface that allows PC-based automation controllers to control INSTEON-compatible lights, appliances, heating/air conditioning systems and alarm systems directly via the INSTEON network.

Other PowerLinc Options:
PowerLinc Modem - INSTEON Serial Interface
PowerLinc Modem - INSTEON Serial Interface (Dual-Band)*
PowerLinc Modem - INSTEON USB Interface (Dual-Band)*
* The dual-band interfaces send and receive both powerline and radio frequency (RF) INSTEON signals, so they doubles as an Access Point. However, dual-band interfaces do not supply power to external devices; the interfaces without dual-band do.

Note: The PC connected to the USB INSTEON PowerLinc Modem must remain powered on and running the home automation software at all times of usage.

No More Fights over the COM Ports
Unlike other home automation interfaces, which use the slower RS-232 communication protocol, the USB INSTEON PowerLinc Modem transfers data at much higher speeds. Best of all, it plugs into any USB port or expansion hub so there's no need to plug and unplug other peripherals like PDAs, scanners or printers when you connect it to your computer. In fact, many new computers, in particular laptops, don't include serial ports any longer, which will make using serial-based interfaces expensive and difficult to use.

    X10 Compatible
The USB INSTEON PowerLinc Modem is fully INSTEON compatible and X10 ready. Homeowners with existing X10 networks can easily migrate to an INSTEON network without having to discard all their existing X10 devices. X10 ready means that it can respond to X10 commands from an X10 controller and it can send X10 commands to X10 devices. Please note that INSTEON devices repeat INSTEON signals but not X10.

    Don't Block your Outlets
The USB INSTEON PowerLinc Modem includes Smarthome's innovative pass-through AC outlet on the front of the unit. This outlet allows you to plug in additional AC devices. While the outlet doesn't have any control features, it really helps against "power strip build-up."

    Safety Tested and Factory Certification
All SmartLabs Design products rigorously tested and safety approved. The factory for SmartLabs Design Products is ISO9001 certified. Because of this passion for quality, Smarthome stands behind the entire SwitchLinc V2 line of products with a full 2-year warranty.

Got this to replace my 2414U after it stopped working with a warranty replacement LampLinc Dimmer. Haven't been able to get it working. 2412U doesn't connect with all the devices my 2414U connected with in my installation. Tech Support was not helpful. Too bad and I was about to purchase about $200 in more Insteon dimmer switches and remotes. Now, I'll have to go with another company and start all over again, loosing my $500+ investment.
    JAMES -- rogers, AR   1/30/2013
Excellent device. had to change from the 2414U to be able to use the extended command set on the newer modules. Tried the 2413U but it did not work at all. There is too much RF interference in the device location and it kept jamming up the 2413U and waking it usless. The 2412U has no RF and is powerline only like the 2414U so it worked just fine. The 2412U is also a much better built unit with a 3 rd prong ground and an internal power transformer and a pass through outlet. Excellent device the 2412U is compared to the cheaper and usless 2413U.

This was missing from my original order/shipment. When I called customer service the representative was very helpful and in reviewing the shipping weight of the package confirmed the missing product. This approach for "quick" confirmation, representatives curtousy, and patience with my call makes for a winning model that other businesses can use for their customer support. This is what brings customers back to do business. Thank you and keep up the good work. /r Robert L Behm

On my windows 7 machine, it worked for one day, and I haven't been able to get it working since then.
    CARL -- bourne, MA   7/17/2010
I'm using this with Micaraverde Vera. It works very well.
    PETE -- louisville, KY   5/13/2010
This one detects power failures that don't occur, causing a controller to resend commands. Once or twice a day would be tolerable by not the 10-20 I see.
JERRY -- vernon hills, IL   3/6/2010
When the unit works, it's a wonderful thing. However, my HomeSeer software loses the connect about 2-3 times a week and I have to reboot everything to get back up and running. At this point I don't know if it is the modem or the software and haven't had time to figure it out. I did have a bit of an install issue (getting HomeSeer to recognize the modem), but a call the the Insteon hotline resulted in a quick fix.

    Excellent Product
    W.JOHN -- hollis, NH   12/27/2009
I was very disappointed to learn that this unit has known issues where it simply locks up. I'm using this with HCA and the HCA developers are hard at work trying to find a workaround for this issue. This problem has been well documented on both HCA and SmartHome forums.
    JEREMY -- houston, TX   12/13/2009
So far this thing does all it's supposed to do. I wish I would have known that there was a version of this with an RF access point in it (#2413) before I bought this, because the RF version would have been preferred. That being said, I can't take away from this product. It was shipped promptly, and works great.
    RICHARD -- berkeley, CA   12/2/2009
Faster than the 2414u, but has errors from time to time.
    RICHARD -- berkeley, CA   10/28/2009
Much faster than the 2414. But, it has already hung once in the month I have had it installed. I simply unplugged it and the plugged it in again to clear the problem. Still, it is worrisome.
WILLIAM -- millstone township, NJ   10/23/2009
Must have for a 220 house. Set up was simple and now all my switches work!
    kev21986 -- Indiana   10/5/2009
Great product. Much more reliable than the PLC I had before. Highly recommended.
    TIMOTHY -- azusa, CA   9/24/2009
This is my second unit for my second Windows Home Server installation and I am very happy with the results. I use it with mControl and both systems work well. Make sure you follow the instructions with your controller (COM PORT, Drivers and Connection type) to ensure proper function.
    RICHARD -- washington, DC   8/13/2009
I bought this to replace a PowerLinc Controller (2414U). I can't believe the difference this device makes in my system's reliability.
theGadgetGuy -- ann arbor, MI   7/29/2009
I just replaced a 2412S Serial model with this USB unit after lightening disabled my serial unit. Amazingly this 2412U unit seems to be 3-4 times faster. When used with my PowerHome HA software, complex room lighting sequences that used to take 15-20 seconds now execute in 3-4 seconds. In addition the comm reliability of my 2412U has been phenominal. With all prior PLC and PLM devices from SmartHome I have had a lot of Insteon device errors with numerous timeouts and retransmissions. This 2412U has been running for several days now with ZERO signaling errors as measured by my PowerHome reliability reports. In over ten years of HA efforts, starting with X10 I have never been so pleased with a unit as this one!
    -- henderson, NV   7/23/2009
very nice product wish it had a built in noise filter
    Rob D -- arlington, Va   6/15/2009
Oh, I wish this worked. The concept is phenomenal, the ability to have HA software support is a dream... but the 2412u falls short of expectations. I can't get this thing to give me a consistent signal, it completely depends on a computer to be running 100% of the time, which I find to be a huge downside, and the weird intermediary software is not only difficult to find, but buggy and prone to crashing. I can't recommend this over the serial version of the unit - get that instead and save yourself some headaches! This should never have been released from the Smarthome labs. I love Insteon and Smarthome's products, and this is a very rare case of Smarthome falling short of expectations.
    TIMOTHY -- azusa, CA   6/9/2009
Item works great with mControl and my Windows Home Server. A must for any system.
