Essential Info

Replace an existing light switch with Keypad Dimmer to remotely control lights and appliances from a single wall switch location, all without running new wires. The Keypad Dimmer has a built-in 600-watt dimmer that is controlled by the large top and bottom buttons. The 4 other buttons can be linked wirelessly to control other lights or appliances in other parts of the house. All buttons feature backlit status LEDs so you can see at a glance which lights have been left on (or off).

Imagine turning your master bedroom light switch into a control station where, as you are going to bed, you can see that the kids left their bathroom light on and turn it off, check the status of the garage door, dim down the lamps on either side of your bed or create an "Goodnight" scene that turns off lights throughout your home.

Install one by your front door and if you forgot to turn off your bedroom light on your way out in the morning, you could simply press the corresponding keypad button to turn it off without having to run all the way back to the bedroom.

Some devices to control from the keypad include INSTEON LED Bulb, plug-in modules, wall switches, thermostats and even low-voltage control. Check out the full INSTEON-compatible product list for more devices.

The Keypad Dimmer installs like a traditional wall switch with the exception of requiring a connection to neutral which is available in most homes (If you are unsure if you have a neutral, see How to check if i have a neutral wire?).

KeypadLinc Dimmer is also available in Ivory, Almond, Light Almond, Black, Brown, and Gray.

If you're looking for a keypad with more buttons, consider using INSTEON Keypad Dimmer Switch (Dual-Band), 8-Button.

For an On/Off-only version of KeypadLinc, try Keypad Switch - INSTEON 6-Button Scene Control Keypad with On/Off Switch.

    Easy To Install
The Keypad Dimmer is easy to install and set up and yet so affordable, you'll be able to replace many of your switches with Keypad Dimmers. Just remove the old switch, reattach the line, load, and ground wires with the addition of the neutral wire using the included wire nuts, and you're done.

    Scene Lighting
Scenes allow you to control multiple lights with one button. You can save and control up to eight different individual lights, multi-light scenes, or even your whole home. Because the Keypad Dimmer can be a member of more than 400 scenes (i.e. "Movie Time," "Party," "Romance," etc.), you'll be able to launch various lighting scenarios with a press of one of the keypad buttons. These are elegant features usually found only in systems costing tens of thousands of dollars and requiring extensive rewiring of your home. All member lights can ramp to your independently desired brightness levels at your chosen ramp rates, so one set of lights can dim slowly while another set turns off instantly, all controlled with one command from one button.

    Monitor Other Devices
The buttons on the INSTEON KeypadLinc Dimmer illuminate when on signals are sent and when signals are detected from other linked INSTEON devices. This allows monitoring of lights in other rooms, which is incredibly useful if you want to control lights that aren't easily seen from the location, like those in bedrooms, bathrooms, basements, garages, attics, etc.

    Flexible Setup
The KeypadLinc gives you tremendous flexibility with controlling your lighting system. Other wall-mounted keypads only provide on/off control, each KeypadLinc button can perform up to four different functions. Press a button once for ON; press again for OFF. Press and hold to brighten, press and hold again to dim. If you prefer, turn off the toggle feature to send the same command every time. This is a helpful feature when programming an "all on" command button to press when you get home or "all off" command button to press when you leave for the day.

    Brightness Levels
Adjust the brightness level of the controlled light locally by pressing and holding the top or bottom button. This is especially helpful when you want to create a theatrical experience when watching your favorite movies. You can also adjust and control the brightness levels of linked devices by pressing any of the programmed buttons to send signals to brighten or dim an out-of-the-way light. You can link any of the Keypad Dimmer buttons to other keypads so when the light that is being controlled by both of the linked buttons, it will updated the on/off status that device and show on the KeypadLinc button. That way, you won't even have to leave the comfort of your chaise lounge to see the status of the controlled light. When you turn on the INSTEON KeypadLinc Dimmer, it automatically comes on to full brightness. Setting the preset on level will make the dimmer stop at your preferred choice of 32 brightness levels. With software you can control brightness levels in 1% increments for ultimate flexibility. Each button has an elegant white LED that indicates the current on/off status of the lights being controlled. To match your room's décor, a 4-Color KeypadLinc LED Kit is available with four colors: red, blue, amber, and green.

    Adjustable Ramp Rate
You can also adjust the speed at which the controlled light turns on or off, known as the ramp rate. For example, you may want the light in the stairwell to turn on instantly so you can see where you're walking. Alternatively, you may want the light in the master bathroom to ramp up in a soft, gentle fashion so you're not blinded in the middle of the night. The ramp rate is adjustable between 0.1 seconds and 9 seconds if programmed locally. The ramp rate can extend up to 8 minutes (for a simulated sunrise or sunset) if programmed remotely. This is a great addition to your morning alarm, slowly turning the light on to help you wake up. If you have programmed a slow ramp rate and want to make the light come on instantly, simply double tap the top button. To turn the light off quickly, double tap the bottom button.

    Create Multi-Way Circuits
The INSTEON KeypadLinc Dimmer allows you to customize your lighting setup no matter how your house is wired. It's simple to create a 3-, 4-, or 5-way circuit. First replace all of the existing switches you want to include in the circuit with either a Keypad Dimmer, INSTEON SwitchLinc Dimmer, or a INSTEON SwitchLinc On/Off (Non-Dimmable). The main dimmer must be connected to the standard wires, load, line, neutral, and ground. The secondary switches only need to be connected to line, neutral, and ground. No traveler wires are needed, so it is easy to place one of the switches wherever you need it. Cross-linking all of the companion dimmers to the master dimmer is the last step in the process. Note: Any time the Keypad Dimmer is placed directly adjacent to one another or any other electronic dimming switch, you must subtract 200 watts of capacity from each dimmer. If three dimmers are adjacent to one another, then 400 watts must be subtracted from the capacity of the center dimmer.

The INSTEON KeypadLinc Dimmer is fully INSTEON compatible and X10 ready. Homeowners with existing X10 networks can easily migrate to an INSTEON network without having to discard all their existing X10 devices. The KeypadLinc can respond to X10 commands from an X10 controller, and it can send X10 commands to X10 devices. Please note that INSTEON devices repeat INSTEON signals but not X10.

Awesome, I located this switch at the base of my stairs enabling me to turn everything off before going to bed, too cool.
EDUARDO -- rio de janeiro, XX   5/29/2014
    Very good . Good quality.
    CHRISTOPHER -- frisco, TX   5/16/2014
I now have almost finished retrofit of all lights fans, garage control, thermostats on a 5200sf house. Insteon with an ISY is a great combo and the Customer Service from Smarthome has been a great help when needed
ROBERT -- green bay, WI   5/15/2014
Great solution for use with fan linc
Frustrated -- san diego, CA   5/10/2014
The 6 button and probably 8 button keypads have terrible reliability. The regular dimmers seem better, but still not great. I've purchased over 100 switches, and for about the length of the warranty period they worked fine. About 6 months later... Different story. I've now lost half of them in my condo, and about 1/4 in my house. Hasn't even been 5 years. I contacted Smarthome, and they WOULD NOT REPLACE FAILED SWITCHES in the first batch of about 10 that failed. I asked to speak with managers and everything. Now I've got a second batch, and I'm frustrated as hell that I need to buy new ones, strip them out of the wall and replace them and then re-program again. This isn't how good companies operate, and while we all make mistakes, not correcting them gets you a 1 star rating.
    John -- albany, NY   5/9/2014
I've had 11 of these units fail in 2 different homes after 2-4 years. The symptoms are all the same - the units start clicking and won't control the loads and/or the lights start intermittingly flashing. Resetting doesn't help. This is not a wiring issue as some units do continue to work but most don't. If making a buying decision, put emphasis on reviews that describe installations more than a couple years old as this is where the issue lies not with new installations. When they work, they are very good.
    Ed H -- Atlanta   4/17/2014
I have used various Insteon products since its introduction. Every switch in two homes ,3 story each, has been replaced by Insteon. I am a loyal customer so this review is an exception for me. This product which is an expensive unit is one that will fail every time. This is a useful device and a needed device but not at the cost of replacing it every 2 years. Customer support does everything to tell you it’s your fault. They must be trained to say no as much as possible. Other Smarthome devices can get an RMA online but not Insteon. There is a special line you must call. There is no escalation except by email. Don’t expect an email back from a supervisor. The dual band units seem to act up and blink lights off for 2 seconds or more when they are the radio receiving a wireless signal. Those lights will not blink if you go to another part of the house and use a different receiver. So there are no phantom links. Another failure mode is it just stops working and cannot be restored. The turning off lights for seconds issue will go away for a while when you factory reset and then reload the entire switch. Problem being it has always come back. Smarthome ignores the reviews online and tells you nothing is wrong with this product. While Insteon has promise I would not buy this particular product unless you are willing to go through the effort and cost of regularly replacing the units.

Smarthome response: The symptoms you describe match that of those seen when using the ISY. If that is the case, be sure to change the default 0 hops to 1 or more hops.
    Dissapointed -- Insteon home   4/3/2014
This is a great idea that unfortunately has been manufactured very poorly. The product WILL fail and is not suitable for what it claims to be capable of. Don't bother!! Don't believe the 4 star rating!!!
Smarthome response: The reviewer did not leave a means of contacting them so we were not able to investigate (or find details on) the reported issue.
    CLARENCE -- altadena, CA   3/23/2014
I have used these several times and they work as described in the catalog.
    SJW -- portland, OR   3/20/2014
The 6-button and 8-button keypads work first. I wired our new home in 2010 and installed all Insteon switches. Almost every 6-button and 8-button controller has failed. I have replaced over 20 controllers in the past two years, replacing them with the standard dimmer or on/off switch where I can. Unfortunately, I designed and wired my house with the Insteon keypads in mind. For instance I installed a single gang box with a 8-button controller in lieu of a 4-gang box in my master bathroom and put the rest of the switches in the closet to hide them. This makes for a clean and simple look having a single box control all the lighting. Now I'm stuck and required to replace that switch every 6 to 8 months after it fails. The last one only lasted two weeks! I would suggest only installing one or two switches otherwise you could end up spending $800/year replacing switches like me.

Smarthome response: We are sorry to hear that your experience with these keypads has been poor. Ideally your feedback (submitted through this page) did not include your email address or any other way to contact you to help troubleshoot or other ways to make things right. If you ("SJW") read this, please contact our support team and reference this review.
    JACK -- omaha, NE   3/10/2014
Love my Insteon set-up. Started getting more of these Keypad switches to have more scene control. Love these.
JEFF -- elk grove, CA   3/2/2014
    works great thankyou.
    ROBERT -- flemington, NJ   2/15/2014
This one works fine and easy to program. I hope it lasts longer than the 2-3 yr old Keypad dimmer that it replaced.
    ERIC -- norcross, XX   2/13/2014
Insteon has become a standard in home automation excellence. Excellent imaginative products backed by outstanding customer service.
    Mark T. -- Virginia   2/10/2014
....I've had 12 units fail that are 2-4 years old. Don't rely on the newbie reviews touting how great these units reviews of users who've had them a couple of years. when they work, they are great.
JOHN -- signal mountain, TN   1/12/2014
THe 6-button switches are prone to failure, leading to blinking lights or worse, no lights. Reset options frequently do not work. The failure rate is greater than 75%. In contrast, the rheostat controllers appear to work as advertised. In fairness to Smarthome, the company has been exceptional in providing replacement switches. It would be far better to research the root cause of the problems and then develop designs that function correctly and in turn reduce the frustration of frequesnt replacement.
    MSJ -- Massachusetts   1/11/2014
I have invested over a thousand dollars in Insteon products over the last 5 years. They mostly work great at first, but now almost half of them have started to malfunction in a variety of ways. I thought these were a step UP from my cheap X10 switches, but in fact, the junky X10 switches, which cost less than 1/10 as much as the Insteon, have held up very well. Avoid Smarthome altogether. I've contacted Smarthome - they are not interested in standing by their products.
    JOHN -- monrovia, MD   1/3/2014
I ordered two of these switches. The first one I installed worked fine for about a week and then the main switch stopped working. I replaced it with the second switch and so far so good. I have about 20 Insteon devices in my house so far and I have been completely satisfied. They are much faster and have a better feel than the X-10 devices they are replacing. I have read some reviews indicating that the quality control was not great with these devices, but up until now I've had great success. Hopefully this is an isolated incident.
    THOMAS -- southington, CT   1/3/2014
I use Insteon products with old legacy X-10 equipment and I find the performance disappointing. The output X-10 signal strength of this device is too low to be useful and needs to be increased by design. Given the realities of power line noise generated by the myriad of new devices and their under-filtered power supplies, I don't believe this product line can survive without a major redesign.
    MATT -- allentown, PA   1/3/2014
As I have several of the single-band units I figued a dual-band (for expansion) would be great. I also have (well now HAD) and ISY99i (the older unit from UDI) and discovered that I needed to upgrade that as well in order to use the dual-band keypad. Small tweaks all around, but otherwise Im happy with the product.
