Essential Info

Replace an existing light switch with Keypad Dimmer to remotely control lights and appliances from a single wall switch location, all without running new wires. The Keypad Dimmer has a built-in 600-watt dimmer that is controlled by the top left button. The 7 other buttons can be linked wirelessly to control other lights or appliances in other parts of the house. All buttons feature backlit status LEDs so you can see at a glance which lights have been left on (or off).

Imagine turning your master bedroom light switch into a control station where, as you are going to bed, you can see that the kids left their bathroom light on and turn it off, check the status of the garage door, dim down the lamps on either side of your bed or create an "Goodnight" scene that turns off lights throughout your home.

Install one by your front door and if you forgot to turn off your bedroom light on your way out in the morning, you could simply press the corresponding keypad button to turn it off without having to run all the way back to the bedroom.

Some devices to control from the keypad include INSTEON LED Bulb, plug-in modules, wall switches, thermostats and even low-voltage control. Check out the full INSTEON-compatible product list for more devices.

The Keypad Dimmer installs like a traditional wall switch with the exception of requiring a connection to neutral which is available in most homes (If you are unsure if you have a neutral, see How to check if i have a neutral wire?).

Keypad Dimmer is also available in Ivory, Almond, Light Almond, Black, Brown, and Gray.

If you're looking for a simpler keypad, consider using INSTEON Keypad Dimmer Switch (Dual-Band), 6-Button.

For an On/Off-only version of Keypad, try Keypad Switch - INSTEON 6-Button Scene Control Keypad with On/Off Switch.

This kit comes with colored diffusers that allow you to change the color to Red, Green, Amber, or Blue. Each kit includes diffusers to change the colors of up to four Keypads - one in each color.

    Easy To Install
The Keypad Dimmer is easy to install and set up and yet so affordable, you'll be able to replace many of your switches with Keypad Dimmers. Just remove the old switch, reattach the line, load, and ground wires with the addition of the neutral wire using the included wire nuts, and you're done.

    Scene Lighting
Scenes allow you to control multiple lights with one button. You can save and control up to eight different individual lights, multi-light scenes, or even your whole home. Because the Keypad Dimmer can be a member of more than 400 scenes (i.e. "Movie Time," "Party," "Romance," etc.), you'll be able to launch various lighting scenarios with a press of one of the keypad buttons. These are elegant features usually found only in systems costing tens of thousands of dollars and requiring extensive rewiring of your home. All member lights can ramp to your independently desired brightness levels at your chosen ramp rates, so one set of lights can dim slowly while another set turns off instantly, all controlled with one command from one button.

    Monitor Other Devices
The buttons on the INSTEON Keypad Dimmer illuminate when on signals are sent and when signals are detected from other linked INSTEON devices. This allows monitoring of lights in other rooms, which is incredibly useful if you want to control lights that aren't easily seen from the location, like those in bedrooms, bathrooms, basements, garages, attics, etc.

    Flexible Setup
The Keypad gives you tremendous flexibility with controlling your lighting system. Other wall-mounted keypads only provide on/off control, each KeypadLinc button can perform up to four different functions. Press a button once for ON; press again for OFF. Press and hold to brighten, press and hold again to dim. If you prefer, turn off the toggle feature to send the same command every time. This is a helpful feature when programming an "all on" command button to press when you get home or "all off" command button to press when you leave for the day.

    Brightness Levels
Adjust the brightness level of the controlled light locally by pressing and holding the top or bottom button. This is especially helpful when you want to create a theatrical experience when watching your favorite movies. You can also adjust and control the brightness levels of linked devices by pressing any of the programmed buttons to send signals to brighten or dim an out-of-the-way light. You can link any of the Keypad Dimmer buttons to other keypads so when the light that is being controlled by both of the linked buttons, it will updated the on/off status that device and show on the Keypad button. That way, you won't even have to leave the comfort of your chaise lounge to see the status of the controlled light. When you turn on the INSTEON Keypad Dimmer, it automatically comes on to full brightness. Setting the preset on level will make the dimmer stop at your preferred choice of 32 brightness levels. With software you can control brightness levels in 1% increments for ultimate flexibility. Each button has an elegant white LED that indicates the current on/off status of the lights being controlled. To match your room's d├ęcor, a 4-Color KeypadLinc LED Kit is available with four colors: red, blue, amber, and green.

    Adjustable Ramp Rate
You can also adjust the speed at which the controlled light turns on or off, known as the ramp rate. For example, you may want the light in the stairwell to turn on instantly so you can see where you're walking. Alternatively, you may want the light in the master bathroom to ramp up in a soft, gentle fashion so you're not blinded in the middle of the night. The ramp rate is adjustable between 0.1 seconds and 9 seconds if programmed locally. The ramp rate can extend up to 8 minutes (for a simulated sunrise or sunset) if programmed remotely. This is a great addition to your morning alarm, slowly turning the light on to help you wake up. If you have programmed a slow ramp rate and want to make the light come on instantly, simply double tap the top button. To turn the light off quickly, double tap the bottom button.

    Create Multi-Way Circuits
The INSTEON KeypadLinc Dimmer allows you to customize your lighting setup no matter how your house is wired. It's simple to create a 3-, 4-, or 5-way circuit. First replace all of the existing switches you want to include in the circuit with either a Keypad Dimmer, INSTEON SwitchLinc Dimmer, or a INSTEON SwitchLinc On/Off (Non-Dimmable). The main dimmer must be connected to the standard wires, load, line, neutral, and ground. The secondary switches only need to be connected to line, neutral, and ground. No traveler wires are needed, so it is easy to place one of the switches wherever you need it. Cross-linking all of the companion dimmers to the master dimmer is the last step in the process. Note: Any time the Keypad Dimmer is placed directly adjacent to one another or any other electronic dimming switch, you must subtract 200 watts of capacity from each dimmer. If three dimmers are adjacent to one another, then 400 watts must be subtracted from the capacity of the center dimmer.

    Compatibility
The INSTEON Keypad Dimmer is fully INSTEON compatible and X10 ready. Homeowners with existing X10 networks can easily migrate to an INSTEON network without having to discard all their existing X10 devices. The Keypad can respond to X10 commands from an X10 controller, and it can send X10 commands to X10 devices. Please note that INSTEON devices repeat INSTEON signals but not X10.

Isn't very durable. I've gone thru 2 of them: one was under warranty and the other lasted about 3 years. Kind of expensive to replace on a regular basis
    Peter -- California   3/23/2014
WARNING: These items appears to have a design flaw at least some lots. I purchased 4 of these and in less than 5 years of use, they are all broken, eventually creating a periodic buzz sound. It seems like the power circuit inside is the problem it powers up and powers down continuously. Same for all 4 of these I purchased, thus I lean towards this being a design flaw due to derating considerations, perhaps some capacitor worn out too quickly. Other than this unfortunate problem, it is a nice switch I would have given it 5 if it was durable. Lifetime is way too short for a product like this that becomes part of your house!!!
ROBERT -- oregon city, OR   3/23/2014
The switches on these remotes have to be pushed just right or they will not function. The full size remote which has been discontinued did not have this problem. Sometimes they must be pushed 2-3 times before they work...
    CHRISTOPHER -- frederick, MD   2/16/2014
Switch was easy to install and works great with the isy994i controller. Buttons were also easy to change for the custom look.
WILLIAM -- overland park, KS   2/14/2014
Unreliable junk. This stuff lasts less than X-10 before it burns out, malfunctions, or otherwise disintegrates. I've RMA'd 3 of these now. I'm not installing any more Insteon/Smarthome/SmartLabs products in my home.
    ERIC -- norcross, XX   2/13/2014
Insteon has become a standard in home automation excellence. Excellent imaginative products backed by outstanding customer service.
JOSEPH -- pompano beach, FL   2/12/2014
I buy these to replace keypad switch I buy in the past. They are very appealing and good funtion switches but most unreliable. Most of the smarthome switches I install avarage life span of 3 to 4 years.
    CHRISTOS -- bedford, NH   2/4/2014
I didn't realize how useful this would be. Very easy to install and I was linking switches in minutes. Very pleased with quality of device, ease of use, this is a winner.
    ERNEST -- chatham, NJ   1/6/2014
Let me say first that we are very happy with the operation of the Insteon switch and remote outlet I recently installed. I recently purchased the Insteon Dimmer Switch to control an outlet on the opposite side of our LR wall without having to run a switch cable (no easy access). The plug the builder wired to the switch was the nearest one in the room. My review focuses on installation, help I could have used and got by finally calling Smarthome. The Insteon Switch requires power to operate, that is a line wire (usually black) and a neutral wire (usually white). Smarthome directions talk about needing a 3 wire romex cable at the switch to make this unit work and that newer homes probably have this arrangement. Well not mine. Smarthome offers another dimmer switch that needs only a 2 wire cable, but this one requires at least a 25 watt bulb at the wired outlet. My wired outlet needs to be unused. The third Insteon Switch wire is the load wire. What was unclear to me, and what I finally figured out and confirmed with a call to Smarthome, is that the load wire is not required. The Insteon Dimmer Switch is able to control the wired outlet directly and to also control remote Insteon devices, such as the Insteon Outlet. So, since I was not going to use the wired outlet, I did not need the function of the Dimmer to control it. The 2 wires at my switch did not have a line and neutral wire. (There is usually another wire, the ground wire, usually copper or green, but this is a safety and never used in another way). But, having 2 wires was what I needed to power the Insteon Switch if I could change the 2 wires in the switch box to a line and neutral. My switched outlet contained a line and a neutral wire. The function of the 2 wire cable to the wall switchbox was to switch the outlet. To solve the problem, I changed the switched outlet to operate as a regular outlet (non-switched), and changed the switch feed cable to contain line and neutral wires. To do this a changed the outlet so that all black wires were connected together, and all white wires were connected together. Now I was able to install the Insteon Switch. Since the load wire on this switch does not need to be connected (confirmed with Smarthome), the line at the switchbox is connected to the line of the dimmer (black), the neutral wire is connected to the neutral of the dimmer (white), and the load of the dimmer is capped or taped with electrical tape to prevent accidental connection. The Insteon Switch works as claimed for the remote Insteon Outlet (and for additional Insteon Modules I purchased). We are very happy with how it performs. I don't recommend making the modifications I made if you are not knowledgeable and if you do not have the test meter to confirm your changes. Follow Smarthome's recommendation to use an electrician.

Simply awesome! Improved backlight compared to previous versions and very slim design - great job Insteon more devices with this quality!!!
VIC -- colorado springs, CO   12/30/2013
No negative issues. Works as advertised.
    HOWARD -- orlando, FL   12/30/2013
Works very well but disappointed that it did not allow option to add labels to the buttons for function description.
STEPHEN -- three oaks, MI   12/16/2013
Biggest problem with the INSTEON devices is that they are not well documented with respect to programming. Installation is not a big problem, but even with HouseLinc 2 the implementation can be quite to a bit of trial and error.
    SUSAN M -- cincinnati, OH   12/5/2013
Had a techie install it and set up the scenes. It takes two people to do it easily. Works fine, no problems.
    SHAUN L -- saint charles, MO   12/5/2013
Really like the insteon products. They are being continually improved. I am slowly upgrading my house with them.
    JACOB -- omaha, NE   12/5/2013
Got here on time and worked perfectly out of the box!!!
    DAVID -- alameda, CA   12/2/2013
Wiring and setup was easy, works great out of the box. Far superior to previous X-10 setup. Time will tell.
    John -- Ohio   11/22/2013
These units work great at first then start having reliability issues. I purchased three of them and after about 3 years, the first one started failing, blinking loads, non-responsive, etc. even after a factory reset which is a big pain, especially if you have to re-program them manually and cross-link them.
    GARRY -- tallahassee, FL   11/8/2013
works great but best programed with PLM module.
