mControl. I've been using this for about 8 months and generally satisfied. Smarthome has come out with many new products in 2008 and Embedded Automation has not been able to keep up. So, just becuase an item is insteon compatible, don't count on mControl being able to deal with it, yet. The support staff is usually responsive to questions. Be prepared for some coding if the basics for your device aren't available. This seems to be the only game in town, now, which offers compatibility with Windows Home Server and integration with Vista Media Center. The GUI is very basic and little customization is available, unless you write your own code. My advice is do the research first and know what your getting into.

Great Software! What I like best about mControl is that the engine runs as a Windows service, which means you don't have to leave the application running in order for the programs and macros you've created to run. As long as the PC is running, the programs and macros will do their thing. That's an extremely practical and intelligent design in my book!

This product works very well. This is easy to program. Once you install it on one computer the controls can be accessed from any other computer on your network (you''ll need to make a few tweaks to your XP firewalls). This means you can control your lights and devices from any networked computer in the house. I have used this to program (macros) lights to gradually come on in the morning to wake up the kids and to go on and off at various times. You can program a screen button to turn any or all lights out. You can even program macros triggered by a Powerlinc paddle button - with extremely precise control over lighting levels. Security triggers can be programmed using compatible IP cameras and X10 motion detectors, although you''ll have to dig a little deeper to do this. Excellent value for < $100.
