Essential Info

Most electric companies charge two electricity rates, one price for standard use and a different price for peak consumption periods. Unlike other similar products that can only calculate for one price at a time, the UPM Dual Rate Energy Meter with LCD Display has a function that allows for two separate energy rates and corresponding time periods. This means you can accurately see at a glance how much energy appliances use and what they're costing you. By accurately measuring energy consumption of home and office electronics and appliances you can make decisions on how to reduce your electricity costs. It features a large LCD screen, four simple buttons, overload detection and backup batteries. This easy-to-use plug-in device automatically calculates voltage, amperage, wattage, maximum wattage, run time and total kilowatts per hour; identifying which appliances are costing you the most to help you save money.

Important note: It is normal for the LCD screen to appear blank when the unit is not in use. Simply press any button to activate the display.

I like that it remembers readings after unpluging, so I can read the LCD at a comfortable angle.

I only used the current watts and max watts so far and it works good. The buttons are sticky which can be annoying because you push it once and it thinks you pushed it twice. Overall, I like it and was able to find power "hogs" in my house.
    ERSIN -- clifton, NJ   3/16/2009
It is a very valuable product. Now i know, which equipment at home are energy hogs and which are not. It gives a lot of insight about your home energy consumption. I haven't used its energy consumption feature (kWh). I have mostly used it for its instant power metering feature (the kW). I recommend this (or similar) product for every home. I don't know if you'd need the dual rate feature. I don't...

I haven't used it yet but it's something I've wanted to have for a while. Glad to have found it reasonably priced!
    DAVE -- waukon, IA   12/5/2008
i found this item to be exactly as stated. However, the instructions are confusing and it would help if the display was lit. i did learn that when ordering pay the extra and get 3 day service my first order took 13 days to arrive after it was shipped
    KARL -- hiawassee, GA   10/26/2008
Very interesting product, when I tested it around the house I got some suprising results! Good value for the money.

buttons are quirky. took forever to enter the $/KWH. Push once and it jumped from 4 to 9. Even getting to the screen where you enter the setting was hit or miss, holding MODE for 3 sec as indicated in the manual did nothing. screen is not lined up with widow, small text at top is unreadable. will be looking for another brand.
    Glenn Riehl -- Clearwater   7/31/2010
I just got the meter and started using it yesterday. The setup was fairly easy. It took me three times to enter in the KWatt costs for some reason, but it finally took the third time. Otherwise it was pretty much plug-and-play. One major downside of this device is the display. It's just too small. I solved the problem of seeing the display by using a power strip, but even still, staring straight at the display, the day of the week and what mode the device is in is extremely small and hard to read I had a magnifying glass and could still not make out what day of the week was displaying. Luckily things display in unique locations, so you can figure it out. My eyes aren't perfect like they used to be, and maybe a young set of eyes in perfect condition would be OK. But the display is too small, yet, once you work with it and get familiar with it, that problem can be easily overcome. Otherwise, seems pretty nifty to me. Worth the price, but it easily could have been a lot better with a better display.
